Yet another LED dash thread..

MK3

Car  Dynamiqueee
Just spent about half an hour looking through search results, didn't realise this had been covered so much? Anyway, found the right size SMD's Just wanted to make sure they would be fine to replace the standard ones, as the numbers on the technical specification seem to differ alot from the blue SMD's that most people use. (I have no idea what any of it means)

All info can be found here
http://www.rapidonline.com/producti...unt-LEDs&moduleno=77736&kw=56-2998&uos=EACH,1

While i'm at it, don't suppose anybody knows any atuall shops that sell these? I'd love to get it done on Saturday but post seems to take forever around here. Cheers

they are the right ones for some of what your trying to do, but very little! think its just the dash indicator that use them!

The SMDs in the dash are about a third of the size of them so you need one hell of a steady hand to be able to do it and a lot of experience of soldering.

check out this thread of my car

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=483553

in the end, i unsoldered the SMDs and soldered on normal LEDs. You will find them on rapids website. its a loooooooooong job! give yourself a couple of nights if you are keen on doing it.

Thankss!

Gimme a momento :)

yeah i looked through yours the other day, looks smart! With regards to sizes, mine is a MK2 mind, not sure if that makes a difference? And i'm far from experienced, but i've got a spare set of clocks so if everything goes tits up it wont be that bad lol.

ah!! thought it was an MK3! (your name) the mk2 is a lot easier, did mine when i had one. the SMDs you have shown there are the correct lights to use in that case, even if their not, the plates are far enough apart to be able to solder in place.

hope this helps mate.

My initials are MK, and usearnames MK1 and MK2 were taken. I probably should have realised it would cause some confusion! Cheers for that, i was pretty sure they were the right size, just didn't know what all this meant?

WavelengthLum. int. (mcd)IFVFVFVRView(nm)@ IF (20mA)max. (mA)typ. (V)max. (V)max. (V)angle

The wavelength stuff is kinda imporatnt (as well as the vmax)

Wavelength is the wavelength of the light itself but you also want to know how bright it is int or mcd (second column)

If you have ones with a low nm then they wont shine very bright. The phenoptix ones are velly good here they are in one I did.

DSC00237Large.gif

the ones from rapid are only 500mcd whereas the ones from phenooptix are 1000-2000mcd making them brighter.

Plus ideally you want some with the highest froward voltage (Vf max) possible.

In other words go for the phenoptix ones!! :)

edit whoops this was supposed to be posted before my post above :o multi surfing FTL

Ahh, didn't think to check postage costs! Cheers mate!

But rather then buying from rapid (which they charge you 5.95 postage!!!) buy from here...

Never seen these before - was just going to get some light defusing tape and stick it behind the filter. Would i need resistors or anything with this?

they might be handy for behind the clocks....damn this not being noticed a year ago!

Richy22 - Didn't realise you were the chap who did those in the pic above. It was that picture that made me push myself into getting this done as soon as possible! Going for exactly the same colour layout as you have, except for blue lights behing the temp/clock display

To do the clock properly requires making to circuit boards and mounting them behind the LCD in the clock part.

Do you have a spare one of those??? Just the clock part in the middle (the one that displays temp/radio station???

No, was going to get a spare, but i was intending on just changing the bulbs so nothing could possibley go wrong. I've done a little bit of soldering in the past (mostly at school lol) so i hope i'll be fine with the clocks, but making circuit boards sounds abit out of my league mate. Wouldn't sticking diffuser film behind the screen help seperate the light alot more? this stuff: http://www.metal-monkey.co.uk/acatalog/Coloured_Gels___Films.html

Diffuser paper doesn't work! Just bought a sheet myself and after putting 3 bits behind the screen, it still showed up all blobs I'm afraid!

I can tell you how to do it...or I can make you the Boards up and you just have to solder them in place???

Oh and the secret weapon is called plain old "paper" ;) :)

You have to replace the wedge blbs in the clock part with led's and the best way to get a decent result is by making 2 small pcb's and using paper as the filter :)

for the clocks i used some blue plastic of and old lloyds tsb folder

worked a treat :D

just left the bulbs behid white

Well spotted.. Tried to pm him but his inbox is full :dapprove:

I cannot see any LED's shining through, speak with the poster maybe and see how it was done?

You have pm buddy

I used some filters/diffusers that I got out of some LCD's we use at work. Quite a good result with them although I havent seen how well paper works. If you want some PM me your address and I can send one.

for the dash, try using the Megane 2Ph2 LCD, its the same LCD, but in white with black letring

where can you buy coloured dial faces or stainless steel ones anyone know
i have searched google loads ...
