Cam locking tool.

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Hi all.

Looking at doing the cam belt kit on the missus' 172. Probably gonna use euro car parts kit.

However. Every post on here stresses the importance of the cam locking tool. Is it possible to rent this tool rather than forking out the £40 ish dealer price. (It is £40 ish right???)

Seems daft to buy one when i'll no doubt only be doing it the one time.

Cheers!! :)

tool? TOOLS, PLURAL! there are 3 in total

add £100+ to your £40

myself, Birchdown, Rentech, Angelworks and JMS (maybe more) will all tell you you MUST release the inlet and exhaust cam pullies to do the cambelt proedure correctly

i don't care what anyone else says, it is the correct procedure, i've tried it several times without releasing the inlet and exhaust pulies, it never lines up properly end of thread!

agree 100%. Even though Renault give 2 procedures, it's never accurate enough to satisfy me without slackening and cleaning out EVERYTHING

All im going to say is mine were changed a year ago with lazer tools and has done the job just fine

Laser pins are fine, but the cam alignment bar bends (it's not even hardened!!!!!), and a pulley locking tool doesn't exist at all

changed mine and another f4r belt with them and no problems. Cam alignment bar seems upto the job to me. I dont see how on earth you would bend it

If you dont care to slacken the pullies you are unlikley to bend it correct. IMO the biggest amount of force goes in to the cams when tightening the pulleys up. BUT as Fred and all the other chaps with propper experience say you wount get the tention to 100% perfect without slacking the pullies.

Cant realy see how £140 could be to much to pay for the propper tools. Just plain madness. Cant afford that you cant affort the car, sell it at once! ;)

^^ yeah you have to be up to speed on all costs of running these little buggers.

BUT i can understand someone NOT wanting to spend 140 on tools he will prob use ONCE in a lifetime (if he sticks to the car and all goes well)

We (CS) did consider purchasing a set and offering a hire service.

But the deposit would have to be similar to the price of the tool for it to work.

Plus i'd rather one of the specialists on here did it properly.

Didnt slacken the pulleys come to think of it, seem to remember it taking a while to get some good tension in there, but it got there after cranking over by hand then re-tensioning a few times.

10k+ down the line and its fine, speaks for itself really

I started doing the belt on my 182 today n slackened off the exhaust pulley in able to get the cam lockin tool into place as wouldn't line up. don't no how far exhaust cam moved round. is all timeed up ok, would this have any effect on the vvt if that cam wasn't moved back to where it was b4?
