Clio 172 Cup - Track Project

  FRP - Clio 182
I have learnt that there should be a heat shield over the starter motor which to be honest would make sense, I am on the hunt for one, won't use car till I have one fitted.

Some useful information to note on the standard RS Clio springs:

White/White is 172, White/Yellow is 172 Cup, Blue/Yellow is 182 Cup and I need to confirm what standard is.

Today I managed to remove the grills from the bumper and spray them up,

Masked up:

Sprayed up:

Cleaned and treated the arch liners:

A bit of a comparison:

P1100091.jpg

I didn't fully remove all the tar etc, it is after all a track car, but a good improvement.

Then on to cleaning the arches and a painting up the callipers and discs, probably won't last long but looks much better:

P1100092.jpg

Refitted the grills back on to the bumper, looking much better however the bumper is a mess, looking forward to getting it replaced as really letting the car down:

Cleaned up behind the grills:

Bumper refitted:

Moved the car all was well:

Thats it for another day.

Next up, fit replacement rear arch liner, I have also sourced a heat shield for the starter motor.

Still in need of a replacement spring if anyone can help,

Little update, removed the front splitter as sold it to another Facebook group member, I have purchased a Skoda Fabia one which looks a lot more OEM.

P1100112.jpg

Fitted the replacement rear arch liner:

P1100113.jpg

Hoping to paint the rear callipers silver as well to match the front tomorrow evening.

I have managed to source the heat shield which covers the starter motor and cabling from the manifold which is due to be delivered tomorrow.

I have also managed to find a replacement set of springs to replace the damaged one on the drives side which should be here early next week.

I am struggling to decide what to buy with this months car budgets, its either the Sabelt Steering wheel and boss / Cage or buckets seats (issue is with bucket seats I would need to wait until next month to fit as I would also need the frames which are a further £100)

I am leaning towards the steering wheel.

Skoda splitter arrived today so I fitted it at lunch time:

Also had time to give the rear callipers a quick lick of paint:

Another thing that was bugging me is the fuel cap does not sit flush with the body work, I had a look on the other Clio and I could see that on the Cup it had two rubber grommets missing, you can see where they should have been

Some replacement arch liner plugs arrived, just £1.99 for ten off eBay.

P1100142.jpg

Sorted out the god awful negative battery terminal, some pretty cool fixings for just £3 for both again off eBay.

P1100143.jpg

P1100144.jpg

Fitted the replacement heat shield after about an hour and half, couldn't fit from the top so had to fit from underneath, was so annoying and frustrating, in addition its not in correctly as there should be a small gab where as its resting on the underside of the manifold still.

Did you have to remove arch liners to fit the splitter or at least undo them as I noticed under my bumper doesnt feel smooth so im guessing they attach to it?

  FRP - Clio 182
The bumper inner arch part has two screws which screw to the bottom of the bumper, you will see them when lying under the car, you can leave these in position and just make a cut in the soft rubber splitter so that it does not cover them. You should see what I mean when you look underneath.

Not much done lately, I have however sourced a OEM front splitter for just £20 delivered, slight crack and can see where it has been repaired previously but once fitted I much prefer them compared to the cheap Skoda alternative:

P1100156.jpg

P1100157.jpg

You won't be able to see the track once fitted :)

Bought a replacement oil filter as the oil is pretty low so thought I might as well drain it all out and fit replacement:

P1100155_1.jpg

Purchased a Boss for the steering wheel, usually £60 and I got it delivered for £40 so a few pennies saved:

I have also started purchasing the parts required to move the battery to the rear of the car:

Why? I don't get why people do this? You want weight and traction over the front wheels and the rear end light and therefore loose surely?

Cars looking niiice btw. Summer is awesome isn't it!

  FRP - Clio 182
Its about balancing the weight more evenly across the car, as I wrote on another page, its all a bit of nothing for my level, however more space in the engine bay for when s**t goes wrong can only be a good thing. In addition it will cost about £50. If it was much more I probably wouldn't bother.

Finally got round to replacing the drivers side spring, obviously made the car feel so much better, however still facing some issues with feel through the steering wheel, off to get the tracking sorted which will hopefully resolve the issue.

After using the car for a while now the car felt disjointed and felt as though it was waving from side to side under hard acceleration, in fact it felt pretty bad and gave me no confidence when driving it hard.

I went to get the tracking sorted by a friend who works on the Cup race cars and he suggested that I have the hub replaced, as there was movement in the lower ball joint, the wheel wobbled when wiggled side to side. He noted that the lower ball joint looked as though that it had recently been replaced so was confident that this would be the issue.

Replacement order from Tim Finch, (breaker for Renault Sports) £28 and arrived the following day.

Replaced this evening and wow the car feels fantastic transformed it. So happy with how it drives now.

Replaced a friends Halfords 21mm socket that we snapped when replacing the front spring,
5 Litres of oil ready for the oil change and the replacement hub:

P1100187.jpg

Faced one issue in that the ****ing disc locking nut rounded off so had to drill it out.

P1100186.jpg

Also started on the Ford Racing Puma again ready for the 15 year anniversary.

P1100188.jpg

The racing puma is on a separate build thread for those that are interested.

I took the FRP out for a spin this afternoon and it dicks all over the Cup do not get me wrong the Cup is still sensational however the handling and breaking on the Puma are quite simply breath taking, the Cup would keep up I would suggest due to the power difference. If once when i have finished with the Cup it handles 70% as well as the Puma I will be happy.

In all honesty if the Clio does not quite cut it, I will look at getting a possible crash damaged FRP or one with a blown engine and look at putting a large engine in it. (Main issue is cost of second hand parts, if you can even find them)

However for now the Clio is cheap and with the plans I have for it I am excited and hopeful it will meet my needs when on track days.

Oh and yes the FRP really is that good.

  FRP - Clio 182
The hole in which the lower ball joint slides in to was more oval than round in the one the I removed thus allowing the movement creating the terrible driving experience.

  FRP - Clio 182
Yeah so happy that its resolved the horrible driving issue.
Thats a mate of mine and yes defiantly a hoody for car work :)

Good build although for a track car your putting a lot of effort into cosmetics!

Also FRP's are great, I used to have a ZS with an FRP lump but they really aren't that fast. Clio brakes aren't 4 pots so they are never going to be as good out of the box, but with decent pads and fluid they can be great, look at CLs.

  FRP - Clio 182
Yeah I cannot help myself on that front, however its time I have spare so nice to keep i clean  Also use it to potter about in.

Yeah the achilles heel of the FRP the power, however on a country road up to speed, cornering speed is ridiculous.

  FRP - Clio 182
Right well with the big push to get the Puma ready for next weekends meet I haven't done much on the Cup, I have however received a few items that I purchased

P1100357.jpg

P1100358.jpg

P1100359.jpg

Power lead arrived also ordered the battery tray :) Almost all the parts arrived require to relocate the battery to the spare wheel well.

I have also purchased a set of bolts (4 x M8 40mm) for the OMP bucket seat frame which is also due in tomorrows post.

Next up bucket seat and harness.

Okay so the battery tray arrived this morning,

P1100426.jpg

I have made a start with setting up re-locting the battery to the rear, I think it will be going in this location which is pretty much dead centre of the car.

P1100427.jpg

I removed the battery and fed the power lead through:

P1100428.jpg

Its a bit of a squeeze in the sill but does fit nicely

P1100429.jpg

Location once pushed through the grommet

P1100430.jpg

I have checked and it seems that there is a 60AMP fuse built in to the cable, so it need to remain fixed, it will however fit nicely into the new junction box.

P1100431.jpg

You can see in this image where I have positioned the junction box, just happens to be a screw thread that I can utilise:

P1100432.jpg

Out came the tub of odds and sods, suitable 10mm lock tight nut found to suit.

P1100435.jpg

Mock up of the proposed layout, I need to get a replacement drill as mine has died, also need to source some suitable fixing bolts for both the battery tray and the fuse cut out device.

P1100436.jpg

P1100437.jpg

So there we are pretty much ready to fit once the bolts arrive and I borrow or replace my drill. Ay tips or suggestions welcome.

Oh the earth strap will be going to a bolt that holds the boot catch as suggested by a another Clio owner.

  FRP - Clio 182
In all honesty not a lot, the battery weights a lot and just spreads the weight more evenly throughout the car, in all honesty just getting a smaller race battery and locating it under the seat is the better option however it worked out more expensive than this option.

Smallest update ever, lugs for the power cable have arrived.

Just need to borrow / buy a drill so that I can mount all the parts. Next week should have it all fitted. Frustratingly the Corbeau Club Sport bucket seats are out of stock so might be a couple of weeks before I can get one delivered.

I also cannot decide between these harness's

A little more movement on the Cup, replaced the front Skoda front splitter for an OEM one.

Started sorting out the cables for the battery:

Will the location of the earth cable be adequate?

Just the drill required now in order to bolt the cut out and battery tray down.

I remember when my Sabelt looked like that.
Strangely when I stripped my car out i found a similar amount of poker chips, but i also found a gummy bear and a fossilized moth

So I finally sorted a drill out and have now relocated the battery to the boot :)
