Dephasor Palaver

Right, I need some expert opinions

I can see (I think) from the invoice below that my car had the Accessory belt and Timing belt changed. This was at Renault only 5K miles ago.

This ticks both the sections in the service manual, 'Accessories Belt and Pulleys' and 'Timing Belt and Pulleys.'

But what is a Dephasor? Is it just another name for one of these belts/pulleys? Has my Dephasor therefore been changed, or is it something completely separate? And therefore needs doing.

The reason I ask is because I have a slight tapping/vibrating noise from the engine. I got my mechanic to look over it but he thinks it's all fine, however not being a Renault specialist I thought I would try and get a second opinion just in case.

I'm hoping that if my Dephasor was changed at Renault, I will be able to go back to them and get them to look at it FOC, assuming they didn't do the job properly. Hopefully they will honour it seeing as it was only done 5k miles ago.

Something which should last 36k miles surely cant need doing again in 5k miles.View attachment 72971View attachment 72972Hopefully the pictures work well enough to read.

Thanks for any help/opinions.

It hasn't been changed on that mate. The pulleys it refers to will just be the idler/tensioners that come with the aux and cambelt kit. Dephaser is the main inlet pulley, but it isn't routine to change it

Oh really OK, so it doesn't necessarily ever need changing, just if it goes I take it?

When it goes what happens? I read somewhere on the net that there wasn't actually ever a report of it failing, and that it just gets louder and becomes irritating. Is that true or a load of tosh?

Do the accessory belt and timing belts need changing when the Dephasor is done then?

Where does the 'cambelt' come into this, or is that another name for one of the above.

Cheers

Cheers dude, I did think that was the case.

But does the dephasor actually need doing, I mean I can live with the noise for now it's not that bad at all, just don't want something bad happening from it and being in a complete mess etc

They can go eventually, causing a belt slip and valve bendage. When the house gets bad its time to suck it up and get it changes.

^^yet to hear of that happening! also how would it cause the belt to slip?

Thought the worse that could happen was the inlet cam rattled around due to phasing being messed up. Suppose it depends how violent that got really, but the belt shouldn't slip. Exterior of the dephasor is fixed, so that won't be affected

I think you would have to ignore a very loud noise for a very long time before it actually failed in a way that killed the engine, they sound like someone shaking a collection tin for ages without that happening so people always given in and get them changed IME.
Not actually heard of one ever actually failing, but should think if it finally does the inner would just spin in the outer and mash the valves before the belt would have an issue.

Mines not loud at all really, I have just got OCD. But spoke to Renault and they will have a quick look over it for me FOC and give an opinion, whether I believe/trust them or not is another matter.

Thanks

Believe it or not they told me last time that my car didnt have a dephasor lol

And yet you feel they are qualified to give you an opinion on if its working?

Just have a word with a local cliosport specialist, I see you are in surrey so you must be pretty close to either MWM or Stone etc, why not try one of them for an opinion?

We'll I've had my mechanic look at it and he thinks it's nothing to worry about. I just thought that seeing as they did the most recent work they would give me an opinion free of charge. Plus I need to go down there (Crawley) anyway to get the book stamped which they missed.

Never heard of MWM or Stone, any more info on these? I'll do some Google searches today.

Cheers

Apologies mate, I just assumed cause they were traders on here people would have heard of them, but I guess as they dont post a lot thats not always the case.

Michael Woodford Motorsport (now in staines but havent updated their website):

Stone Automotive (in chertsey):

Cheers dude, I had a look and found them already :)

They're actually both on the same site in Chertsey. Close enough I know, but still an hour or so from me, which is quite a lot just to get someone to hear my engine etc. It's still an option though.

Cheers
