GETTING RID OF MY TT 3.2 V6 FOR A CLIO SPORT 197 WITH CUP CHASSIS!!

  renault clio sport 197
hi dutch 182
cover blown!! still think i'm 18 though- thats the trouble!
keep it standard maybe - theres a fine line between looking smatr and looking tacky so may well do just that .
kneel
had to take my audi in after 1000 miles for a new cat converter - only had it 6 weeks and they wanted to give me an A2 courtesy car!! sod that - got an a4 in the end & it took them 3 weeks to fix it as well - never had the trust in the car after that.
thanks for all yoru responses - love the banter!

^lol, my 197s built better than an audi it made 1400 miles before needing to go back in :quiet:

How long can you hold your breath? ;)

There built to break mate, hense the reason they are astrinomical for parts its no coincidence that we all seem to be suffering the same faults round about the same mileage, dont get me wrong, i like renault i just hate the fingers crossed reliability they carry!

right ok
what's going to go wrong first!!
i'll take bets that i'll get to 5k without a hitch!!

Keep it 4 years and see what your saying then, i think you got a "bad egg" when you bought the TT, Audi make some of the best cars going!

Renaults are just not on the same level of quality. But on the other hand you will get on great when you play "guess the rattle" lol

  renault clio sport 197
danny 172 - never keep a car for that long!
longest i've had a car is for 18m - get bored very easily -
i'm a lass remember!

  Audi TT 225
I'd have kept the TT to be honest ;)
Much better car, a bag full of style and german build quality.

After owning a renault.... I'll never buy french again!

  tiTTy & SV650
197 is very under rated on here, very capable cars - enjoy!

My 182 lasted me 37,000k of pretty hard driving with no major problems before I sold it on and Renault will have made some changes to iron out the known problems with the basic engine. Plus the chassis is inherited from the Megane 225 so it'll be pretty robust IMO.

I just gave my mates TT V6 a clean and a wax today, and its immense.. I honestly can't understand someone wanting a clio over it..

hi justin
difference between cost of 197 ff + cup pack & audi tt i want is roughly 16K !
audi insurance is mega expensive even at my age - excess ridiculous - have to have a tracker or no-one will insure for theft - mpg is sh*te - it;s the older model - needs service & mot next month - new tyres need to go on - cat converter needed changing at 1000 miles and not felt right since - even though audi says fine - warranty runs out next month .
some tw*t - prob young lad in clio ( only joking) - reversed into my wheel arch and that needs repairing - just sick to death of paying out all the time - this clio can be in the garage every month for all i care (prob will as most of you have already told me - lol) and it would still be a shed load cheaper than at the mo.
yes audi is nice if your pockets are a bottomless pit -
when you're older & had a few nice cars it's just not that important any more;) the only thing i'll miss is in the summer with the roof off and thrashing it down the motorway - sounds fab! but not 16k fab
just want a fun sportyish car thats not going to bled me dry just to look good!
right got that lot off my chest!

  Audi TT 225
Insurance on a mk1 (older) TT 225 coupe is next to nothing (actually cheeper than my 172!) and Im 28, I dont have a tracker, I park on the street. Its group 18 or 19 cant remember.

If your original cat was duff then of course it would feel different after fitting a new one. And there are plenty of audi specialists (non audi) to check it out if you dont believe what the dealers say...

Bleed you dry... I bought a ph1 172 for 4.5k and ended up needing a new "everything" to the tune of 8k all together.... most of the mods I did were because the OEM crap broke and needed replacing.
Sold it for £1750.... gutted!

I do see what you saying... but I dont agree with all of it. And dont expect much more from renault, parts are still very pricey for sport models, customer service is pants, dealers are terrible lol.

  Snatch with DIY mods.

Ive blown nearly as much on cars as i have on women:mad: And they all depreciate with time and f**king quickly. never as much fun to ride as they are in the first few months either:rasp:

Picked my 182 up today. yes it's not built like an audi,a range rover although for 67grand that was built like s**t. and it's certainly not a V8 Vantage.

BUT it's f**king fun to drive. has plenty of engine for it's weight. looks good. and was cheap and wont kill me in a year when i sell it.

you do indeed get what you pay for! but throwing good money away is no laughing matter:eek: lesson's learned the hard way:quiet:

I know that they aren#t built to last for ever however Im confident that this will last. I never really had any major problems with my mk2, just an annoying as hell sunroof lol. This isn't an issue in the 197. The build quality isn't amazing but I mean that things dont feel solid and a lot of bits feel 'cheap' in comparison to for example my mums Civic however thats about it. The car will last without any major problems Im sure of it.

What else does 14/16 grand get you? a 2/3 year audi maybe. and not even a proper one:evil:

i love it how people are saying the clio is made to break, i got the problem solved with it over heating some thing a sensor at around 21k and nothing else happend before or after it (touchs wood as i type).
Yea like the woman said its ok to have cars like that if you have the pocket for it with no end of cash.
A friend of mine has the S6, took it in for a service as its just out side of the 3 wear warrenty and the bill came back to almost as much as a clio sport, £9000 i think he said because they spotted problems in the engine, suspension, exhaust and other things yet 3 weeks before everything was fine they said.

Different people want different things, I guess.

Personally, and I'm being very serious here - if a well looked after TT and new 197 Cup were up for sale at the same price in front of me - the Clio would be my choice straight away.

The TT is an excuse in accessorising. Nobody needs a TT to a specific job. They just think they need a TT to look good. And even that's questionable, imo.

The 197 on the other hand is needed as a new car that can blat along the A & B roads with the best of them - all the while retaining a relatively cheap price tag.

Function over form. Wins everytime.

D.

Disagree there I'm afraid. He paid around 14k for his TT, it has a couple of scratches, but otherwise immaculate.

Function over form, the TT wins it, faster (by quite some margin) comfier, better built.. Granted I'm not totally keen on the look, but looked nice on 19s

How long have you got mate>? I could sit here all day and rhyme off 1000 cars that 5/16k would get you...

Dependant on what your looking for ill just assume its a "reliable hot hatch"

~ 1994/5 Escort Cosworth
~ 2003/4 Focus RS
~ 2003/4 S2000
~ 2006/7 Astra VXR/Corsa VXR (If thats what your into)
~ 2004/5 Golf R32
~ 2003/4 Integra DC5 (import)
~ 2002/3 M3 (higher mileage likley for 15k)
~ 2006 Civic EP3 Type R
~ 2004/5 Evoloution 8 300/340/360
~ 2004 Impreza WR1
~ 2003/4/5 RX8 (231bhp variant)
~ 1997/00 Civic EK9 (import)

To be honest mate this is what i could come up with off the top of my head there are plenty more cars out there that will do the same thing the 197 will do, and do it better. You would probaly see change from 16k out of most of these!

If I HAD to go down the VAG route, I'd be looking at the S3 or R32, I think? Of the 225 TT and the new S3 I drove, both would have battered my 182 in terms of outline speed and were built like tanks.

I took both on my favourite local A-road and both cars handled it well and both cars clearly got me back in one piece. But fcuk me, were they boring! About as much fun as being hungry and eating a 5-gallon tub of whipped cream.

Utterly, totally soulless. I'm sure I could survive a nuclear strike sat at the wheel of a TT whereas my 182 would probably complain of a small pot-hole. But I went back home on that very same road in my 182 afterwards and it made me so happy to drive. No rock-solid built-quality and perceived 'status' can ever replace simple fun at the wheel.

Come on man - you have an Exige, don't you? You should know that!

D.

thats what i love about these forums!!
P*SS TAKERS!!
i always type with caps lock on but will bow to clio pressure and reduce my letters.
yes the tt is quite good but at twice the price not that good! plus everybody has a tt around here and nobody has got this yet - must live amongst a lot of hairdressers and beauty therapists - i'm neither.
the car is nearly 3 years old and the way i have thrashed it i dont think that it will be long before i have to have repair work - the tt had to have a new cat converter after 1000 miles so dont trust her too much!

often up and down the m1 between junctions 15 and 25 - will post a piccie when i get her !!

look forward to my clio days!!

Don;'t let Colin G hearing to slagging of TTs! :)

Yeah i agree totally.. I loved my 182 cup, in fact it was probably the best fun i have had in a car, as in it was quick, handled well, predictable handling, yet skittish slightly. I'd actually say, given the choice, i'd probably pick a 197, just for that fun factor..

Granted the TT isn't going to be the most fun, but its still a better car imo..

the womans back!!
i can just feel that my tt is about to go t*ts up! and i'm fed up of forking out. so it was keep the tt and risk it or have a brand new 197??
get what you mean about only fun to ride in the first few months as well - i said i get bored easily!
although been with hubby 11yrs and still happy so not doing too bad - as long as he keeps buying me cars!

love the cars by the way dutch - range rover not for me - even though looks good - couldnt be arsed parking that:rasp:

You get what you pay for? Not sure about that. If you take servicing costs (£930 for my last at Lotus) into it, you get loads more for your money with the renault. You have a car that can play with the best on the right road at a minimum cost in comparison. What would you have, an F430 or all of the following 182 trophy,197ff, 197 cup, R27,R26,RS lux, clio williams,5gt raider, renaultsport spider and your own full time Renault mechanic on salary?

Dont get me wrong, I love the F430 but I would take the renaults. Better value I think.Same goes for the Audi or an RS clio and RS megane.

I dont agree with this post mate, think about it>

If you do own an F430 then this is more than likley going to be a 3rd or 4th car. This isnt about how many cars you can buy with the cost of an F430 this is about comparing it to the likes of an Audi.

And if you have got that kind of money then your not going to be buying hot hatches, your gonna be buying the likes if an Audi Rs4, M5 bla bla..

An S3 would be your run about!

I respect your opinion but I would prefer a selection, just because you can buy an rs4 or an m5 (or a tt)doesnt mean you should. I have been down this route with s3's and an m3 smg but you can get more for your money. Thats my point and I live by this as my 197 will be to replace my third car. Thats why i said i would rather have a CLIO 197 AND A RS MEGANE instead of 1 tt. The Ferrari bit was just an extreme comparison.

love the audi just think i have one of the rare dodgy ones!
i'm only gonna be keeping the clio for a year or so anyway.
how come this forum is full of people who sl*g the clio off?
or have you just been on here too long and become cynical??!!;)

Hey princess this forum is terrible for slagging off the Clio 197. It mainly comes from owners of older Clio models.

I'll let you work that out for yourself ;0)

I have an R27 which a similar spec to yours.

I promise you the car you have bought will make you smile from ear to ear! Give her time to run in as she gets better and better with age. Make sure you feed her a good diet of V-Power fuel.

You should also sign up to www.clio197.net as there are lots of grown up people there who love to chat about their 197's!!

Have fun!
