I've just broken down and it sounded expensive

If your after a engine, try Sutt Autos, Steve was great with mine when i got one from him, £500 with all pipes, alternator, starter motor, Ecu the lot, and the engine was on around 45k,

14hours labour to fit the engine is taking the piss,

I saw the garage this morning. A couple of spark plugs had been crushed and sharded at the bottom. They are 90% sure one of the valves has come loose and fallen into the pistons, and are fairly certain the engine is screwed.

They are saying they have to quote 14 hours to replace it as they have to do things by the Renault 'book' times. They have said that if this takes less time they will of course charge less. Their top mechanic hasn't done a 182 engine, but apparently they do a lot of work for Renault changing engines in some Renault concept car, I can't remember the details. This is quoted as taking 20 hours and their top mechanic can do it in 10, so hopefully the £800 labour quote will be more like £400-500 for the 182.

This of course is without the extra cost for regassing the air con (£65+VAT), new cam/aux kit (£150?), and new water pump (£25?).

I think I'm looking at about £600-1,000 all in with them. I trust them so know they will do a good job. They will obviously guarantee their work, but not the engine I provide.

Engine wise I am still hoping to find one for sub £500.

I just want the car back on the road.

That right there is bulls**t. Ive been told numerous times by main dealers "oh well we normally charge £££ for cambelts but the workshop is quiet at the moment so we will do it for £££ instead".

Funny how they can weaver those book times when it suits them?

I would seriously get a trailer and take your car to someone else other than Renault, there are plenty of specialists on here to take your pick of that wont try it on.

The people I am dealing with are Renault specialists, rather than Renault themselves. To be fair on them, they are giving me a worst case scenario of 14 hours, as they've not done a 182 engine before. I think that is fair enough.

Someone at work has given me details of a garage in Maidstone who will pick it up, source and engine and fit it for me though, and it sounds like it might be a bit cheaper, plus they should be able to guarantee the engine AND their work. I'm going to call the guy later to find out how much he will charge.

Oh sorry when you said Renault book times i assumed it was at Renault. Whats the name of the specialists your using then ScarySquirrel?

Id have 2nd thoughts if they havent touched an RS before mate, plenty of Renault specialists out there who wouldnt have a clue about the RS models, i was quoted £220for a cambelt change from a Renault specialist, and i had to explain to them they needed both the cambelt kit and aux belt kit and they thought the cambelt kit was £50 :S

Once i had explained it was circa £200 for both kits and they needed the correct locking tools they said they wouldnt be able to do it lol

Speak to one of the specialsts on here mate, who work on the RS models

Sorry I don't think I was very clear. They have looked after loads of 1*2s, and the mechanic used to own a 172 in fact. It's just that he hasn't done an engine change on a 182 before, but has on many other Renaults.

JMS would be my choice if you want the car repaired. James would probably be able to help source you an engine too.

They seem to get very good comments on these forums so I look forward to hearing from them. I don't suppose they could arrange for the car to be picked up as well do you?

I would love for them to just give me a price to get it back on the road, and then for them to sort everything out from there, hopefully keeping it at a reasonable price.

Hi Nick - got your email, don't worry we can take care of everything :)

I'll get back to you a little later today/tonight - out testing our manifold for the rest of the afternoon.

Echoing what Tom has just confirmed, they will take good care of you and i'd recommend letting them deal with it.

You don't live very far from me so if you need any help with lifts etc, feel free to drop me a PM. I charge you nice price...;)

Well i say not very far.....40 miles actually, but still...the offer is there.

Cheers Ollie :)

I like that JMS say they can handle everything. I just want the car back on the road with as little faffing around as possible. Would be great if they could source an engine as well :)

I'll wait to hear from Tom.

Always worth dealing with the traders on here, they have reputations to uphold with thousands of us on here who are the Renault Sport drivers who invest money and time in their cars.

You will be in good hands, your just gonna upset loads of people on here who want to know about JMS's manifold :rasp:

Don't ask Tom or James to play football though....

You're in safe hands with them mate. get them to fit a new exhaust too whilst you're there.

You read my mind, if money permits I was thinking of getting the RS192 done at the same time. Not sure I'll be able to afford it after all this though :(

I went through the same, was determined to get it sold as soon as it was sorted. BUT, once back on the road with the timing set spot on by NW Performance it never fails to put a smile on my face, i now wont be selling it until I have the pennies for an R26 Megane.

Get it all sorted and you start to love the car all over again!!

  Megane 225
Mine bent a conrod the day after I got it! Put a new bottom end in and set up. Mate of mine who worked for a Renault Dealer's did the work for me. He charged me £300 for the work. That was to take the engine out, replace bottom end, retime/change belts and put back in! £800 labour is excessive!

the same happened to me last year(june 2009)timing belt with 40000kms and I bend valves and cams.Sorry mate, but I am sure that your timing belt is broken.

  Looking for 182
I am quickly losing hope of getting this car back on the road for under £1,500 :(
The two quotes I have had so far have been around £1800 for labour and all parts (including clutch, cam, aux, etc etc.) Then it seems I am looking at £700+ for the bloody engine.

I have a feeling I'll end up selling it as a non-runner for around £2k and then using that to buy another piece of s**t car, going back to where I was 5 weeks ago driving a crap car for the last 8 years. hurrah!

I am so pissed off with all of this. Why the **** has this happened to me?

  Looking for 182
This is me we're talking about though, I am the definition of 'bad luck'. Nothing ever goes right for me, so the chance of finding a cheap engine is non existent. The chance of me going down to the garage tonight and smashing the s**t out of my 182 is very high. I am bored of this whole business now. I drive a piece of s**t for 8 years and finally treat myself to something I actually want, 5 f**king weeks I've had the thing and now I have nothing.

Sorry for the ranting.

  Looking for 182
Well I'm going to wait for the quote from JMS then weigh up all my options. Sorry for ranting so publicly, I feel better now though!
