My Flame Red 172

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
Ok so decided to spend the afternoon giving the front end a mini freshen up. The objectives were:
- Try to somehow fix the broken headlight brackets (previous owner must have been a lump fisted idiot!)
- Wet sand and polish headlights to remove oxidisation
- Spray grill satin black as it had faded
- Fit Fabia splitter
- Remove yellow fog tint
- Optional: Remove acoustic valve

So the first task was to sort this mess:

No real interesting method used, I ended up cleaning up the surfaces of old silicone (why people try to use silicone is beyond me) and applying Gorilla epoxy to bond each clip back together. Extremely strong stuff so lets see hoe it stand up!

Next up was fitting the splitter. With my drill and self tappers I set to work:

I worked my way up one side, pulling the splitter into line and screwing on every tab to ensure no movement or bumps once fitted

Took me a while but got there in the end:

Managed to get it pretty neat!

I then decided to tackle the headlights:

As you can see the factory coating was well and truly shot. I wet sanded with 2000grit followed by 2500grit and then used Meguiars D300 on a microfibre spot pad to remove the sanding marks to leave this:

Before:

After:

Not 100% but a marked improvement. Annoying as there's watermark type stains on the inside of the lenses. I then used Autobrite Ghost Rider to seal them up:

(I then whipped round the windows with the ghost rider too, sealed the windows ready for winter :) )

Whilst the bumper was off I opted to whip this little bugger out:
DSC_0245_zps57f7e633.jpg

Blanked off the vacuum feed and taped up the plug and tucked them away out of sight. I also tucked away various other wires and the headlight washer hoses which had just been left hanging behind the bumper, I also blanked them off as there was a nice puddle of screenwash in the bumper too

I then started on the grill. Prepped with Autofinesse citrus power and a good scrub, followed by an IPA wipedown. First coat of satin:

Whilst this was curing, I decided to remove the tax disc holder:

DSC_0247_zps236984bd.jpg

And polished the glue off and the rest of the windscreen with Autoglym Glass Polish

Next I finished off the grill:
DSC_0248_zps0b425b43.jpg

And fitted back to the bumper being careful not to break and clips!

Once the bumper was back on I trimmed the splitter:

DSC_0251_zps0c5b7a34.jpg

And peeled off the fog tint.

Here's how she looked before:

And how she stands now:

Much cleaner!

Thanks bud. Yeah it's a brilliant colour. Can look a bit of a sh***er when it's not clean though!

Ah this is the one I saw as I walked out of uni the other evening!
Looks very smart! Will keep an eye out for you again!

Where abouts? I've only been out a couple times in the last week :)

Was maybe Thursday. At the pedestrian crossing on north hill, just as I was walking home I noticed you go past. Meant to do a spotted thread but didn't.

Got a nice bonus today in the form of a tax rebate :) so should be able to get the dephaser etc done sooner.

So the flamer started ticking a bit, odd as only recently it had oil, filter etc. Decided to check the plugs and saw this:
DSC_0235_zpscf93kudx.jpg

DSC_0236_zpsmnhu9e2g.jpg

Should there be unburnt oil in the inlet manifold? Turned out a couple plugs were slightly loose so I nipped them up, what's the reason behind plugs going loose? Also, should I be looking at replacing the rocker gasket? It was only one plug covered in oil when I pulled it.

  Many.
Rocker cover doesn't have a gasket, and to reseal it you need to do the belts, so just get the specialist who does your belts to do it at the same time. Its pretty standard tbh. Pretty much every Clio I do the belts on I end up resealing the cam cover.

It'd be worth while doing the inlet O-ring too (pictured), and oil like that is normal.

Plugs probably weren't torqued correctly.

Not much to update due to being off work at the moment (had a hernia repair). Finally felt fit enough today to clean the flamer, wanted to clay it etc ready for the winter but couldn't manage it. I took the opportunity to try a couple new products. Namely, Chemical Guys Mr Pink and Chemical Guys Diablo. Won't bore you with too many pics, we all know what a dirty car looks like but a couple shots of how diablo works:
Diluted 3:1 going on the wheel, nice thick gel consistency, stuck to the wheel instead of running off all over the floor:
DSC_0239_zpsf8nqujim.jpg

DSC_0240_zpscaknovat.jpg

Foams up nicely with a AF boars hair brush and still clings on for dear life!
DSC_0241_zpswnn8wkd6.jpg

Completely forgot the after shots but I'd be tempted to say it's one of the best wheel cleaners I've used, I know 3:1 isn't the most economical of wheel cleaners and tbh, could have gone more diluted with it. I like that it clings to the wheel instead of just running off, I didn't feel like 80% of it was wasted into the tarmac. Also it foams up brilliantly, doesn't dry out in a rush and cleans really well. Big plus is it smells of tutti frutti gum :)

As said, I also washed the 172 with MR Pink. Smells like strawberry laces, gives lots of nice suds but most importantly is slick across the paintwork. Some shampoos feel very 'watery' across the paint which always makes me wary. Mr Pink remains slick throughout and cleans very well. Fairly economical at 1-2oz per bucket (20L).

Also during the rinse noticed Auto Finesse Revive was holding up well, applied one coat 3 weeks ago:
DSC_0243_zpst1rttaem.jpg

At this point I wanted to clay, tripple and wax the flamer but time, and my hernia, wan't on my side so called it quits. Opting to give the car a going over with Meguiars Ultimate Quik Detailer.

Sorry for the shots that follow, I got carried away. I LOVE flame red!

My next step still is getting the dephaser etc done and should hopefully be done before christmas.
Short term fiddling may include:
- re-furbing the bullets as the paint is peeling on them (suggestions welcome)
- possibly debadging the rear and replacing with a newer style RS badge,
- tidying up some tired looking areas such as the rear wiper and the plastic plate (?) it holds on to, the inlet manifold, front wiper arms and the lower grill.

Good stuff :) has got a few scuffs i need to save to get done but its a gooden, yh mine need refurbing will re do them same colour tho, wanting some none standard one really

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
I've seen a few flamers being broken from time to time, may be worth just replacing panels with good items instead of getting the scuffs repaired ;) I'd love some turini's or OZ superturismo's

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
Ok folks, I have received the V5 and on the bottom is a note for repair in 2011. Not good. I'm now in a predicament. Do I plough on with getting the dephaser etc done or do I cut my losses, sell and buy another RS? In reality what is my 172 worth? 2003, 126K, little service history, needs dephaser etc and has been damaged/repaired (even though the structure looks/feels sound). She runs lovely and is well looked after but is it going to be worth investing my money into something with little history and a damage log?

  clio 172 2002
thats a joke aint it, should be rate if its managed to get this far through mot's and all with that damage repair, dont know alot about it but maybe get a known mechanic to have a quick look at the area that was repaired if it says?

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
Only two small advisories on last MOT. I've gone over the paint with a fine toothed comb and can't see any evidence of dodgy repairs or anything. All the panels are straight from the inside. As said, had both bumpers off and the slam panel and crash panels are intact with no welding etc. Maybe just like a cat D/C or something?

It'll be a cat C/D, if it's straight then sod it, I'd keep it. You will take a knock on the sale value, but not a huge one if the buyer is genuine and understands that the car's not a complete shed.

I believe that if the cars accident recorded on the log book, then it's a Cat C instead of D. This means it would of needed a VIC check etc from VOSA before going back on the road. Varies so much accident damaged cars, could of been someone who had no idea and just called their insurance company with a couple of broken bumpers and a light or something, or could of been quarter panel / front or rear panel pushed in who knows.

I personally would go with whatever you feel makes you happy, if your not committed to the car, then wave it goodbye!

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
I know it's a straight car, just annoys me a bit that I didn't know before. Everything in my head says sell it and put cash toward another RS but I'd only want a flamer or a LY, both of which seem fairly expensive (one flamer on eBay at the mo is over 3k). All I can say is she's lucky she's a flamer!

Mate I know the feeling, if this car wasn't Glacier White, then I would of never of got it, my thread will explain why lol...

However now I know it inside out, and love the hell out of it 1 year later, I've probably over budgeted just a tiny bit though.. and I still want to do a great deal more to it yet!

I live on the outskirts of Plymouth pal, work in town though so always about somewhere, these dark nights are hiding me I guess ha!

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
Right folks. Spoke with the mrs and decided I'm going to sell the flamer and start off with a more investable base. So if anyone knows of any RS's going for less than 1k then please let me know. Obviously I'm looking for one that hasn't been damage logged and with some sort of history.

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
I've seen a couple for less than 1K, less than 100,000 and a couple have already had the cambelt done. Unless mine was a non-runner or needed serious bodywork, I'd say between the lack of history, damage log, 126k mileage and it needing the dephaser etc it can't get much worse tbh

  clio 172 2002
whats your car list/specs/budget im on alot of facebook car sale sites down this way

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
As luck would have it folks just got off the phone to a chap who seriously wants a flamer and is a reno mech himself so isn't bothered about the belts etc. He wants to swap with his black 172 that's on 88k and had the belts done at 76k.

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
Yup, the service history isn't complete but at the end of the day it's had less owners, less mileage and the belts have been done, can't argue at all
