rev limiter problem...



  clio sport 172
my clio 172 02 reg rev limits sometimes at 6800, then other times at 7200, or there abouts, wen it revs higher the car also seems to get there alot quicker... is this a heard of problem..
i can get a diognostic check on it, but any suggestions would be helpfull. the car is completely standard btw. thanks

It limits because you are revving it hard when the engine is cold. The limiter is set lower until the oil reaches its ideal operating temperature.

Don't confuse oil temperature with the guage shown on your dash - that shows water temperature. The oil often takes longer to get warmed through, ideally leave it 5-10 minutes once the water temperature's reached optimum before booting it. Or carry on as you are and it'll break, eventually.

referring to the renault 172 workshop manual, the limiter is based upon water temp and not on oil temp, so could be a sticking thermostat... or its just not warm enough
