rock ice

hey, ive finally managed to save up some cash to replace the lovly renault clio standard cassett unit that comes with the car. (no more portable Cd player to cassett adapter)

i thought about getting a Sony CDXMP40. i wasnt sure on how it performed so i thought i would ask to see if any one owned one and what they thought. i have thought of getting a CDXM640, which is a nice head unit, but alittle old and doesnt play mp3s.

i also was going to get rid of the paper coned speakers that constantly buzz and replace them with a set of door speakers (6" if i an fit them in) and some 6x9s. i was orginally going to get some componts and a small bass in the back but since i listen to rock mostly i didnt think having the bass would really work as well has just having some good 6x9s.

any thoughts would be great guys. cheers.

Yeah the sony CDXMP40 is a good little head unit ! My mate has it and it sounds good with his 6x9s ! The biggest speakers you can get in the door (without modifying) are 5.25 inch (13cm)

You wanna get something other than a sony mate if you want a decent sound. I duno why but sony seem to be making really shoddy head units recently. Ive not heard a good sounding sony for a long time.

Try one of the low end Alpine or Pioneer or even Clarion units. Theyll give you a much more pleasing sound.

If your clios a Mk1 Then im sure youll easily get the 6" components in !!!

Ive got 7" up front and i hardly had to mod the door. All i had to do was cut a slat at the bottom out of the metal where the magnet sits through and bend it over so my wiring connector bits dont touch the door.

yeah its a mk1. ive read a few reviews on the mp40 now and every one is very mixed as i have heard from a few people how sony head units arent up to much, but then i read a few reviews and some comments by people about the mp40 and theu said the sound quality was one of the best for that price range.

components wise, ill try for the 6" but i dont really want to mod the door to much as im only keeping the 1.4 for a little bit unit my next year no claims come through so i can grab my self a 1.8.

im still thinking of the 6x9s and some door speakers and i think expensive door speakers will sound better than cheaper componet

component speakers are front speakers, the difference is that the tweeter and mid are seperate, so you can split the frequences so speakers perfom better.

My advice, buy the HU (IMO an Alpine defo!!!), then spend as much as you can on fronts, say £100 depending on budjet (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=2374DLS R5A £135 http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/shop/default.php?cPath=24_26_283http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/shop/default.php?cPath=24_26_283 ) & a 4 channel amp (a http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=987Mac Attack 4050( http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/shop/specials.phphttp://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/shop/specials.php ) £99 - very good amp and UNDER RATED (few rare this occurs but it is)) Then buy a sub, if you can afford it, but if not wait until you can.

PLS dont get 6x9s, if you do and you want to buy a sub, you will have to throw them away anyway (if you want to know why do a search o this forum) and it will cost you more in the end, and they are not a subsitiute for subs

hmmmm well i only have a budget of about 100 so i might just get the head unit, and i might wait till i have some thing like 300 to spend so i can get some components and a sub. i guess that will be better than having the 6x9s as i can take the system out when i finish with the car and put in straight into my next model.

i quiet like the max attack amp. any ideas on a good sub? i saw this kit that was on ICS
