Rocker cover Replacement

  Clio 172 PH2
Just had the 172 in for its first service since Ive owned it and the guy said its a solid little car (which is great) but the rocker cover is leaking oil into 2 plugs! Hes not a renault specialist, just a local good garage with a decent reputation.

Would I be better getting this replaced by a specialist or letting him change it? Whats involved with it and roughly how much should I be looking for this to get repaired?

It is going to get quite expensive, because when you resealed it, you'll need to redo the cambelt and aux belt. Its circa £300 or so just for all the bits needed for the cambelt / aux belt change iirc. Let alone the labour and the retiming.

In truth, it may be cheaper to buy a decent / healthy engine that has recently had the belts done and sling the whole engine in.

This one for example;

Cheers for that, I know this is going to sound stubborn but this little fellas only done 70k on a 53 plate with a FSH so id rather stick with it and get it all healthy again! Id say if I could get it all done and healthy and few other tweaks here and there for under a grand id happily keep it. I got the car from someone local who I knew and know it wasnt hammered all its days. I picked it up for an amazingly good price too!

Why?

As said wait until cambelt time, or have it all done early if it's causing issues, I don't see why you think you need another rocker cover though?

no issues just a bit spluttery of a morning prior to me knowing, hes changed all the plugs as expected and it seems little better but no doubt itll go spluttery again over the coming days/weeks.

Because the solenoid seal only takes 20 mins or so to change, I would personally explore this before spending more than I had to, or putting up with spluttering due to soaked plugs.

just an opinion

Renaultsport Clios all splutter when cold and even sound rough on idle. Take it to a specialist for advice on the leak. It might be ok if you're lucky then wait until the next cam belt change and get it resealed - that's what I did and mine had leaked for a few years.

Yeah will do actually I'll just save some monies and get everything done in a oner I guess. Do the guys at SWR have a good reputation?

Rocker cover is matched to the head I am afraid, so you would need a new head.

Why would you need a new head. Just reseal the rocker cover.

I left mine leaking until the cambelt change was due ( about 18 months ) the car was fine.

This would be my advice too.

It might just be the dephaser solenoid seal, i would try that first

You would see if it's the solenoid seal and it wouldn't leak into the plugs as leads are sealed at the top.

Its due a cambelt change in 18 months or so anyways so is it worthwhile leaving then?

Yup!

The cam cover and head is matched, as they are vertically honed as a pair.

I think the OP is talking about removing and re-fitting the cam cover... and not actually replacing it for a different one though.

That's interesting, I'm sure I was told it was a new head required. Clearly not, based on the responses above! Lol!

I've edited the ones above in case someone finds the thread in future....

Lol, thought I was missing something.
