Would you spend £18,200 on a Clio 182?

Thing is though people claim it's the best hot hatch of the era, but in reality it's not even the best Clio of that era.

If people are going to lay out that kinda money, they'll be looking at a V6 over a 172/182.

I don't understand. Where will you be getting the new clio 182 shell from? Or are you dissecting old shells and dipping them?

Or are you making your own clio shells?

I work in engine development R&D and for just for one 500hr test, it costs around £100,000... I understand you have money but yeah.. I can't see this happening at all.

As a few others have said can't see you being able to build and sell at a profit for £18k

Sounds like a great project mind.

What's the multi-quote bit all about? Must be getting old as I can't quote people!

Perhaps this is the wrong demographic then. When I was a member, of course the 182 was a brand new car which people were paying (£15k?) for, and then going out and spending a couple of grand on.

For me, this is a pitch to make people think twice of going out and spending £35,000 on a new Golf GTI or similar.

I would plan a more extreme version too if I prove the initial concept - I plan to deconstruct a Cup race car see what can be learnt. I would swallow much of the R&D as it is just a bit of fun for me.
Definitely getting old mate.

I see what you're trying to do, but they're not old enough to be classic, so it will just feels a bit.. old.

The tech side of things will let it down heavily from that respect. Take singer, everyone creams themselves over the old dials etc, but on an old clio, is anyone going to cream themselves over the analouge orange dash?

Clio 182/172 for sure you would make a loss on every one. Clio 182s are just not collectible enough to justify that sort of money. However if someone done it to say something that is also Renault powered but even more collectible. You would do it too a 5 maxi turbo, Clio Williams or I would love to see an updated Deloren.

Funny you mention the orange dials @Rob , where it's getting darker earlier now I drove the Trophy the other night and smiled at that warm orange glow within the otherwise pitch black cabin (forgot that the heater dial isn't illuminated). I personally love the nostalgia, and personally don't care about anything other than how it drives.

But, if it was going to be a genuine daily driver in comparison to modern machinery it requires a 6th gear, less noise and a nicer ride. That's where it all snow balled from really, as no modern hot hatches do anything for me.

I will continue working on the business plan and potential suppliers. I may just build my own and then hand the keys to some journalists before deciding it on being a goer.

The clio mk2 doesn't have the pedigree to pull in the buyers imo. If you were going a rehashed Williams then you may have a chance but where would you start that from?
As for price, yeah it's a lot to ask for a clio, but is it a lot to ask for a brand new warranty covered better built modern one? Maybe it's not enough to cover costs? But who'd pay even more?

People are saying £18k is alot for a Clio but i dont think its anywhere near enough for a project like this.

Take a look at the Alphaholics GTR £230,000 (3000 hours of labour)

https://www.alfaholics.com/gta-r/

Or Eagle E Type £300k+ (4000 hours labour)

https://www.eaglegb.com/36/eagle-etypes

I think the problem with the clio is you can buy one for less than a grand. Until they arnt readily available i cant see a project like this making sense.

Unless you were able to offer it to a market where they arnt available.

As Jonathan Ward’s number one fan, his model is the one I would follow.

Several stages of restoration just like he does with TLC and then moving to ICON for the real nerdy s**t.

However that’s not to say I don’t disagree with going all out singer style. I just don’t think it’s needed. There’s a surprising amount of stuff on them (1x2’s) that just works well.

Take a 182 trophy, strip it to bits, reinforce the shell, figure out how to make the gearbox stronger, couple it with a more usable gear linkage than the pms one (you wouldn't want a new car to have transmission noise inside the cabin), make the suspension components a bit stronger but not over the top (should be reasonably comfortable also for daily driving), probably keep the trophy dampers and springs as they are still very good, 4 pot brakes, an itb kit as reliable as possible, and then put it back together making sure it won't rattle like the usual french car, rework the electrical system to be fail proof and that's it.
See how much it costs you and go from there.
I know I would pay for a car like this easily the same amount they charge for the 220 trophy.
Just do it, worst-case you will end up with a great car for yourself.

Now, a properly sorted Clio Williams would be the job.

For a passion project, building a perfect 1*2 would be fantastic (maybe even with a small amount of forced-induction). You could abide by MSA rules and make a race ready version, there’s plenty of money around the paddock.

Obviously we don’t know your financial background so it’s a bit different telling someone on 30k a year that this is a daft idea, someone with a healthy bank account and a passion/background doing this sort of stuff, go head! I’d love to actually see it done, even if it is above my means.

You won’t be able to buy and build a collector-spec clio for £18,200 let alone make profit out of one.

My mate has pretty much the perfect spec clio, built it himself over 3 years so owes him peanuts. We’ve worked out it would cost at the very least, £20,000 to build, maybe even £25,000 as he cut corners when painting it. (Its grey now but if he ever rolled it, everyone would know that the shell used to be blue! Lol)

I would love to see this happen. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for the build thread and if I had a vast car collection and bank account I’d put a deposit down now.

If you're going up against a modern hot hatch such as the Fiesta.. Why not also go for a low boost engine rather than bodies?

For 18k I'd be wanting heated seats and a great sound system as well. Not just a track car.

Already on the case for this, BTW.

The Recaro Trendline people refer to is actually a Style Trendline. There is a Style Topline that can be specified - from Recaro - with ventilation and heating. It also just so happens it comes in the same pattern that Renault specified for the Trophy.

We’ve got a VW Up GTi and it’s remarkably similar to my FF Clio 182.
The VW is under £14,000.

As to people paying £18,000 for a new 182, there’s a 22,000 miler been on sale for £5995 at a dealer in London for six months with no takers

Personally, I LOVE the idea of it. The issue comes by posting it here to the people that still own them because they're cheap, fun cars.

Your market wouldn't be those guys anyway, more the people who have really fond memories of the car and would buy one as a second/third car. There's a TON of money in nostalgia.

It sounds like you've really done the research and given the money/space then I'd love something like you're describing if it really was Singer-level. Is it Rob that you know well?

Nice 182, Im weight up cars at the moment. Dont want to get rid of my 182 love it. but recently i feel im spending money to keep it alive rather than actually for drive-ability ?. Whats the vw up gti like? A old mate of mine owns one said it felt quite fun? Its only 1.4 isn't it? Is the wheel stud pattern the same as the 182 do you know, would like to switch out my wheels of the 182 to the vw up if i did.
----
EDIT
(just looked it up)
the build of this car looks almost exactly like the 1*2. its just the 1.0L engine thats putting me off abit.
My issue is im torn. Wife wants me to be sensible ... ie the up gti. I don't want to be sensible .... ie rx7
LOL

it's a 1 litre turbo, a decent remap will see 140-150bhp

Nice driveway! I am picking my 70th Anniversary V8 Defender soon - can't wait!

The UP is a funky looking thing. For me, the 182 is a better base. But just as importantly, it has credibility and - for me personally - it's a nostalgia thing as much as anything.

If you made a 182 with vented seats (and everything else you’ve described) then you could probably talk me into buying one lol.

There are fools like myself who probably would sink that sort of money in to a car. Ive spent north of 20k on my 182 but that has been over a few years. Its pretty much the perfect 182 as it stands. Im not sure if I would spend 20k in one go though. I enjoyed building it more than driving it though and sadly it hardly ever gets driven now.

Spot on Chris, this was what I was trying to get at earlier.

You’d buy one and paint the badges white. Nostalgia.

The Up GTi is a great little car, the engine is very strong (it will pull in sixth gear uphill at under 50mph four up)
and it’s generally great fun to drive. It’s got most of the options as standard, the only thing against it for some people is the seats are not very sporty, although they look nice enough.
Handling is very good, tbh it’s very much like my 182 which is running Eibach springs Cup dampers and a full geo setup with camber bolts etc.
It’s easy to get an extra 30bhp but l’m not sure the car needs it, it’s well balanced as standard and you can use all the power without losing traction or suffering torque steer etc.
