Dilemma... C7 RS6 or R8 V10+

  RS6+ & 40d MSport X5
Evening folks, been a while...

I’m caught in a bit of a dilemma here.

For those of you who don’t know me or my story, I sustained serious injuries on my road legal Yamaha Raptor 700, 4.5 years ago and my left leg was pretty badly damaged. At that time, I had a B7 4.2 V8 Avant S4 (couldn’t afford the RS4 lol @Christopher 🤣). Anyway, I had to sell it as it was a manual, and I needed an auto. I promised myself a C7 RS6. MY17/18 Performance model is what I’m after now. I had my heart settled on this one:

BUUUUUT.... I’ve made the mistake of looking at R8 V10+ (MY16/17) and convinced myself that you only live once etc etc:

So my dilemma is as follows;

RS6 with no finance and never buy a supercar.

Or

R8 £60k cash and finance the other £25k (HP), run it for a year or so, as a weekend warrior then move into RS6 next year.

I don’t need to worry about practically as I’ve got an E70 X5 40d MSport as my daily. My only issue is, I don’t have a garage (yet) but I do have private parking to the rear of my house.

RS6 has been my dream for years, but I’ve spent the last year or so watching Daily Driven Exotics on YouTube and would love to tick the box.

Hmmmm.. 😳

Surely r8 then onto rs6???

Two birds, one stone...
The dilemma probably is = Finance or No finance tbh.

I’ve just cleared all my debt, and don’t fancy another monthly payment but I dare say it would be massively worth it. Or would I get as much fun without the finance with the RS6?!

Yeah true, but I'd bite the bullet for a year or however long, least you can tick it off the wish list so to speak.

Cant help but feel you will always think I should of done it if you don't..

We’re only alive once Gazmar, get the car that you’ve always wanted.
Scratch the itch, sell it and go again with something else next time.

I know finance is a touchy and very personal subject, but if you're only keeping it for a while then why buy in cash at all?

It will probably work out cheaper overall to lease the R8 and hand it back, then maybe buy the RS6 in cash if you plan on keeping it a few years?

I would do it the other way around, buy RS6, drive for a year or so, save up whilst not having finance, sell and buy the R8?

Especially if you don't need the RS6 for its practicality I'd be more inclined to keep the R8 long term. But then I'm biased, R8 is one of my dream cars and a guy down the road here has a blue V10 plus, it's awesome!

Out of those two - the RS6 for me. I just can’t get excited at all about an R8. It’s an oddity, but not necessarily in a good way.

It doesn’t have the bonkers appeal of its more expensive Lambo siblings. It doesn’t have the legacy or eye-candy appeal of comparable Porsches. It looks like it wants to be in the hypercar class, yet resembles a TT on roids.

I’ve never even been in one and no doubt it’s a great car. But there are many other alternatives I’d consider before it.

R8. The V10+ is superb. The only thing that put me and the missus off when we were shopping were the horrendous costs if something went wrong (we were planning to keep it longer term). As you're only looking at a year of fun then f**k it, enjoy it mate and then know you've got a nice RS6 to look forward to further down the line. (y)

Thing is, that's what makes it good. Most Ferraris, Lamborghinis etc, whilst FAR from the unreliable sheds they were in the past, are still rather fragile and typically quite frustrating to own reliability wise. Not the engine and drivetrain since that is essentially the same as the R8, but the electrics, bits of trim, niggly things that just piss you off.

The R8 by all accounts is exactly as you say - it's like a TT on roids. It just works, it's reliable, it's well put together etc. And whilst nobody pins supercars on their walls for their reliability, it IS a consideration for people who want to own one. And that sound. That fooking sound. RS6 isn't on the same planet.

That's exactly the reason why it's my dreamcar. It's a supercar, yet it doesn't scream it is like a Lambo or Ferrari.

It’s a fair view to have regarding the way they look. But I know I’d be having fun driving an R8, even if it does lack the “flair” or “passion” of the Lambo variant.

You’ve already said you’re not wanting to use this as an every day car so what about a slightly older R8 with no finance but still a V10?

The older gen R8’s haven’t shed well at all, whereas the MY16+ cars have aged superbly.
I’m genuinely torn.

@stoddie had a Vegas Yellow one a few years back and it was superb.

R8 all day. Whilst the RS6 would be extremely capable and fun, super car ownership chances don’t come around very often.

You don’t want to be shuffling around in your 80s telling your grandkids you once owned a really fast estate, when you could be lecturing them on the trials and tribulations of when GranPappy owned a super car and blew £50 notes out of the window as he rolled down Bothwell St.

I do like an RS6, and we all know they are super quick, but as a special "weekend" the R8 must be on a different level?
