Hi, advice if possible. I've suggested to my stepson one of these for his first car, going to look at one at a dealer, 57k miles. Any known weak points, what are timing belt intervals etc? Thanks in advance

Timing chain so nothing to worry about really in that regard.

They seem to like to blow head gaskets if eBay is anything to go by! Always for sale as non runners

Thanks, so is the 1.5 dCi a better proposition? Insurance for him is about the same

I remember back in the days of me looking into my first car - which was a Punto Sporting 1.6 8v.

The quotes I got were pretty expensive - so I looked into the non-turbo 1.7 diesel version. The insurance company actually wanted a higher premium because the engine was 'larger capacity'.

I argued with the woman on the phone as to where she got her reasoning from and she simply didn't budge. So out of the two, a quicker, faster and more desirable car to steal was cheaper to insure than the heavier, slower and less appealing car simply because it was 100cc less in engine capacity?

Insurance. If the entire world went mad, it would still make more sense than that industry.

We seem to have decided on a 1.5 dCi, test drove one at a dealers on his behalf with 60k miles which seemed pretty good be apart from a ringing/resonance between 25 and 35mph under light load, dipping the clutch the sound goes away so not wheel bearings etc. No surprise the salesman originally said he couldn't hear it then decided he could, meeting the 'Master Technician' on Monday - wish me luck!
