Starting Problem

  Clio Sport 1.2 16V
Car hasent been starting first time recently - especially in the cold.

This morning it was freezing and it took me about 6 attempts to start - the starter was turning but the engine just didnt want to start.

I was lucky I got it started I reckon.

Any thoughts as to whats causing it / what could make it better.

Cheers

Mike

Dont suppose you have changed the airfilter for a "performance" one by any chance....

No mods on it at all - I keep it in quite good shape actually.

Need to give it a service soon - that may help.

Spark plugs and coils etc. changed about 12K miles ago so I doubt its that.

Was the engine still turning over quite quickly, or was it abit slow and sluggish, like it couldn't be arsed?

Had this problem on mine too...

Could be your tdc sensor, changed mine an it has been fine since.(touch wood) Think its a common problem. Hope you get it sorted.

Try doing a search lots of threads about starting problems.

Tod dead center sesnor most likly but also check the throttle body is nice and clean as they can get dirty.

You can check the TDC sensor is working if you disconnect it it should read about 220ohms when disconnected from the car.

Still turning over as normal - just the engine didnt seem to want to fire into life.

Had the throttle body and stuff cleaned out about 6 months ago - so I'd doubt thats the problem.

Im doing a far shorter drive to work at the minute - 5 mins instead of 45 so the car isnt getting run as much plus its been two really cold morinings its happened if thats any help.

I tried doing a search but couldn't find much info on it.

Cheers for the help so far.

If you have checked all the other things that everyone else has suggested, then the only other thing I can think of is maybe checking the battery. I gather it has an automatic choke, have you checked that is working properly? These are the only other things I can personally think of. I bloody hate these new fangled computerised motors, older cars were soooo much easier to diagnose problems.

i had the same problem with my williams??? today and yesterday, new tdc new lambar, new cold temp sensor, new plugs etc, and it struggled then i had the old juddering problem wen it was ticking over it keeps trying to die as the revs keep dropping once warm it seems ok, i checked battery today ignition showed 12.4volts and engine running showed 14.9volts??? any ideas???

mike I'd say the crank sensor as well. I did clean the tb a while back and I told you it may need looked at again. But if its not cutting otu like it was when you brought it to me I'd go for the crank sensor.
