Can I afford the 172 ?

  Shed.
YEAH> i wont be buying untill im 19, which is november - at the earliest - but im trying to weigh things up, ive worked a few things out and i think after ive payed the insurance each month and given myself £150 for petrol, i will have a little bit left to save for an MOT and the friggin service. This is to give me an idea of whether i will be getting at 172 or not.

So Heres what i need to know. My part time income is rougly £500 a month, given that with overtime i get £680.

I wont be buying the car on finance to eliminate the risk of me getting into debt or paying s**t loads of cash each month to ensure i will be able to afford it.

Itll Cost me what ????

Start at £500 at the begining of the month.
The insurance will cost me £1700 a year, working out at roughly £170 a month for the 10 month period. I can afford that. So im left with £330 for the rest of the 4 week period.

In my valver right now im getting about 260 miles to a tank (granted ive not been driving like a shitface recently and ive grown up) and i do 260 miles in a week, granted it hasnt hit red for over 2 years now, a tank, at 40L costs me ~£35. I fill up 4 times during my 4 week pay period, so i expect to be filling up at least 5-6times. Deduct £210 (£35x6) which leaves me with-

£120 for the rest of the month.

Questions i need to know-

How Much Do Tyres cost you ?

How Much Is Tax (iirc its ~£220 now)

How much is a FULL SERVICE at a renault garage?

Id apreciate the help, theres no point in me buying one of these if i cant afford it. Ive got no other outgoings by the way.I live with the parents and have no intention, for my own good, to move out untill im employed in a proper job. Still in education lol.

So, is it worth it ? You only live once and im aware ill be paying up the arse to get one of these things lol. If you find that you pay more for oetrol or whatever then say so.

many thankyous.

*wanna buy an Evo 4??* lol!

How Much Do Tyres cost you ? ph 1 172 £35 each for goodyear eagle f1s, ph 2 172 about £60 each for a pirreli pzero nero

How Much Is Tax (iirc its ~£220 now) ph 1 172- £190 for 12 months, ph 2 172 £210 i think

How much is a FULL SERVICE at a renault garage? depends what service it is, tbh i would use a renault specialist like carlton garage in exmouth or mike @ rentect , or yozasport or even gdi etc.

i'd say don't bother tbh, why waste all your money on this car? The valver is a cool car and in a few years you may be in a better financial postion to buy something then?

You could afford one, but it takes a lot of your money away, i'd rather have some money in my pocket so i could save/go out/holidays etc imo.

Agreed, the valver is hardly a bad car, and it is very cool :)

The numbers look quite tight at the moment so I'd probably leave it a little while.

Or buy it and not think about the money, it's not clever but it's fun.

u could prob afford one just mate, you just have to ask yourself do u want to live right up to ur limit every month?

What Seb said

It's not like the 172 is an Enzo or something overly special

They'll still be there in a few years when you're older/better off financially

And a damn site cheaper, they are dropping like stones :/

Are there any other outgoings you need to factor in to that 500 odd quid like rent etc? Also what happens if something breaks :)

No, i was hoping you would offer :rasp: lol. Ive sat in one once and i love the damm thing, which is why im gunna be willing to live up to my limits in money and go without things in life in return for driving a cs..... The working out was from the £500 a month btw, and theres usually a ton of overtime available, usually, this month has been dog s**t IMHHO, but that was because of easter. As for petrol, whe i hammer my valver ive had 190 miles from a full tank and no more than 220 from a full tank.

Russ_16v - Yeah, and id be happy with that.

seb + Evoo - I cant EVER get the time off work to go away, and im not really bothered anyways, i dont drink, when i do, i dont ever spend more than £40 during a night out, and i dont have the time anyways or im at work the next morening etc etc, or my friends are at work etc etc. The vavler is a sweet car, it s just not a clio sport. id shove clio sport seats in mine along with the steering wheel, but again, its not....clio sport enough.

e/ no outgoings mate. ill have to live for a month w/o the car if s**t happens.

Also you haven't thought about other incidentals...

New brake pads, discs, bits of the suspension falling off, oil changes, breakdown cover, new exhaust (if standard and it falls off)

Your fuel budget will go through the roof the first few months too as you make far too much use of the extra power :p

Not that I'm trying to put you off... but no car is worth destroying your cash flow for.

How would you pay for the car outright if you aren't going on finance? Thats a fairly sizeable whack to earn before November and not spend it..

Say 4K for a decent ph1, 5.5-6k for a decent ph2

Hate the ph1. will be a ph2, no more than £6.5k. Got a car for PX or sale towards new one. and also got dosh saved allready. Try to put me off lol, thats the whole point, in November time i will look at what ive got and see if i can afford it. Right now im weighing up what things will cost. How much do new breakpads cost ? I will prolly work out what i need each year for s**t like that and pay a direct debit into an ISA or a sperate acount.

its just a car at the end of the day, theyre not anything special, its just another 2.0 car. not worth ruining your cash flow for

Worst case scenario. Your car needs expensive repair costing £400. Next week you write the car off, have to pay large insurance excess guessing at your age will be approx £600. You can only afford the car if you've got enough in the bank to cover this? I always try to have enough money set aside just in case. Highly unlikely I know but stranger things have happened.

MM. your right. i will prolly save up enough for the 172 which will cost 6.5K, then get a hefty sum of money in the bank, like 2 months wages and all my xmas money etc etc. That way if i do fine one for cheaper ill have a bit of cash spare too, because s**t does happen.

How often do you change your tryes ? 1 times a year ? from experience.

  182 Full Fatt!
You have got to bear in mind the novelty of the thing will wear off after a few months, and you are left with huge costs.
As humans we are never satisfied and once you get it you'll only want something else!

Stick with what you can afford and work your way up. I was 22 before I got a hot hatch and enjoyed it because it didn't break me!

Now I can afford our two cars and really enjoy them, even though now and then I face a huge bill! :nono:

I would also say no. Apart from all the things you mentioned, what if you need a new engine mount, bearings, exhaust, brake pads/disks, all things that can just fail/wear out. Changing a bearing could cost you £100 or so, leaving you with £30 and you havnt been on the piss yet/taken a bird out for the night/bought a hooker.bought cloths, trainers etc

Well ill save like buggery untill Janurary then. Ill decide then.

There was an R32 behind me tonight, i felt so small lol.

Well the answer is no, but im gunna get one anyways, i rekon if i save a few thou n put behind me ill scrape it. if needs be ill keep it off the road for a while till i can afford it.

Stupid idea. But fun.

i thought about one myself when lastyear when i was 17 and started working full time. worked out it was going to cost me £600 a month for petrol and insurance compaired to my £200 for my 1.2, decided against it after a long think and decided a car isnt everything and id rather have my economical 1.2 along with a nice tv, contract phone, sky in my room etc over just a fast car!

my gf's brother is about to get one his on about £700 a month insurance is costing him £170 then over £100 for petrol then over £200 for the car thats almost all of his wage, then his paying bk a loan for a 2k bodykit he had on his bmw mini and then his mobile, he got paid last week before he started he said he only had £70 to last him the rest of the month inc petrol, to me its just to tight, i pay for my car - insurance - petrol - board - phone - broadband - and £30 to my gf for her insurance and i still have more disposable then him and i feel like im up to my limit probably because i spend my money a week before i get it lol

id say wait and keep the valver

  Mini Cooper S sport
Ah just go for it, if it's what you really want. I haven't got a spare £600 sitting around just in case I need it for car repairs, and I doubt I ever will!

You work hard for your money, so go and spend it on what you want - better to spunk it on a car than booze/drugs!

Your right though, things may change over the next year, so ill save and wait, and see if i can afford it. IMO i dont have that much of a problem, no phone, no debts. £600 a month and only got £177 going out for my car, a standing order to mother which inturn pays for mot service etc etc everything except tryes. Rest is mine.

keep the valver...don't drive like a t**t gain your no claims then have your fun with a 172 in a few years....or deppending how things progress maybe a 197 trophy....or if renault get there balls out n push there limits....a new V6;)
concentrait on your education.....that will pay for your road fun if you do well...
trust me.....spending your education time worrying about if u can afford things or not doesn't give you a good start in life...

Been there done this.

I bought a 172 a year ago and cud not afford to run it. I got depressed as my 172 seemed to be a black hole for money! :-( I ended up selling it and running a 1.2 corsa.

Just bought my self a 172 cup now that im earning more cash and also have some savings.

IT would be a big mistake to blow all your cash. Sorry to say but you will have to wait. And i think you know this your self dont you?

Where do you live? ill give you a blast in mine ;;-)

I know its hard when you here about all these guys on heres talking about how cool their 172 is but mate they are only cars! juts wait your turn ad you will be one of the guys on her bragging about yor car and how nice it is.

Couple more years and you will have more NCB's and more earnings! enjoy

Does sound like a waste of money really....not that much of a step up from the valver.

£1700 on insurance is way too steep

Fcuk it, buy it.

You might die tomorrow, you might get a brain tumour and be given 3 weeks to live (i pray to god neither of these things happen!) got to live for today. By the time you can easily afford it, there will be faster and more exciting cars around and running around in a 172 will be the equivalent of running around in a valver today!

I wouldnt do it on that income. That would be a hell of a mill stone around your neck.

Wait a couple of years for the insurance to go down or flogg the valver for a 1.2 for 6 months and put what ever you save into the bank to get your savings up.

Do you live at home? If you do I'm guessing you'll want to get off soon and a 172 on what you earn wouldnt allow you to save etc for a deposit.
