Virgin.net gaming and slow speeds

  MK4 Anni & MK5 Edt30
Hiya folks, not sure if you have had the same problems with your virgin account but its a comman issue at the moment with high pings etc... Well, ive managed to get my £50 cancelation fee waved!! If your wants to move just tell them your a online gamer and they will tell you what you have to do to wave the fee. And problems give me a shout as im a call centre expert!!! :rasp:

I can also confirm that my previously faultless NTL connection has gone to s**t since Mr Branson got his paws on it. I've had it since NTL started offering broadband, I've always got the speed I've paid for. Now I'm lucky to get 4 meg from my "10 meg" connection in the evenings.

To make matters worse, they are bringing in traffic shaping to reduce connection speeds by 75% if you download too much in the evenings. However they seem to have neglected to tell anyone this!

i dont know whats the best isp to switch to then? we have been on ntl since the beggining and found there service amazing, since its become virgin tho its gone down the shitter

I don't know, I'm having a look now. "Be" do 24meg ADSL2 in my area, however ADSL is often more variable in terms of what speed you actually recieve. But I can't imagine it being any worse! Which means I'll have to transfer my phone back to BT and Virgin will be getting £0.00 a month from me

and just as virgin are rolling out ther 20mb (upto) service as well ;)

If I'm struggling to get 4 meg from my 10 meg, there are 2 chances of me ever seeing 20 meg ;) I suspect it's simply something for their marketing department to hype up, something Virgin seem to be very good at. Of course should you be lucky enough to get 20meg, it will only take 25 minutes at full whack before you get traffic shaped down to 5.

How do i know what im currently "meant" to be recieving? ive been on 4mb for ages but im sure we should have been upgraded to 10mb by now...

Mine has been painfully slow in the evenings atm. Its been as low as 11.5kbs downloading off linux servers that can do upto 500kbs during the day.

1st 128K took 266 ms = 492752 Bytes/sec = approx 4100 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 343 ms = 382134 Bytes/sec = approx 3179 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 266 ms = 492752 Bytes/sec = approx 4100 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 266 ms = 492752 Bytes/sec = approx 4100 kbits/sec

These results appear to be rather fast: maybe this page was in the browser cache. (it wasnt)

This is consistant with 4mb yes? I never get above 500kb/s, and never below 300kb/s but sometimes the net is just REALLY slow.

Yeah.... if you download more than 3GB between 4pm and midnight, who the f**k downloads that much?

Loads of people, particuarly those who would pay £37/month for "unlimited" 20 meg broadband. That's not even a single HD TV episode or a single DVD. And it's potentially 4pm - 4am since you will be traffic managed for 4 hours from the time you breach 3Gb.

However traffic management is the least of my concerns given that I struggle to get 4 meg in the evenings anymore due to network capacity issues.

does downloading stuff from the NTL/VM newsgroups count towards your download limit???

Enjoy it while it lasts. 4Mb customers will be traffic managed down to 2Mb after 750MB of downloads during peak times :S

I pay for a truely unlimited net service by Zen - bit pricy but you get what you pay for and the technical support know what they are talking about and they are not foreign!

  ?
3GB?! Thats.. thats nothing! the b******s! ooh we are definately leaving richard c**k face branson ffs

OMG

750 from 4pm to midnight?! thats... f**k all! we have 4 computers... if 2 are surfing the net, watching the occasional video, and the other 2 are engaging in some online gaming etc then thats will definately go over 750mb after a few hours!

Not to mention me downloading about 10-20gb of tv shows whenever i feel like this... BOOO I WANT NTL BACK.

What's more, we noticed that when we restricted the speed of the service for this 5 % of users, we had a positive response from customers (there were less calls into our technical support teams regarding problems with broadband performance). We also noticed that the broadband speed was faster for the vast majority of users.

This might explain my recent shitty net speeds. Im a guiny pig.
