Problem changing to 1st

  Clio Grande
On my mk2 1.2 Grande, I often have trouble getting the car into 1st. It goes if I force it a bit, but I'm bothered that I'd do some damage. I'm sure I read somewhere that this is a common prob (I get 'access denied' when I try to open the FAQ though)

Cheers guys

Check the gearbox fluid level I'd bet it running a bit low.

I think mine is abit low edde but how would I go on filling it up? I've spoke to some Cliosport memebers and they said I will need some sort of pump because the filling hole is in a tricky place to get to.

Bit of a pain to do Renault use a pump etc you can do it with a pipe though. There a butterfly nut on the gearbox facing forwards towards the radiator. Have a look and see if you cna see it its down there you ned to fill that up with gearbox oil until it both doesn't take any more and don't leak any more out as cuch just remember to do it when the cars level and the fluid cold.

are you changing into 1st gear when the car is still moving?

It won't go into 1st at all if the car is moving, unless you force it really hard. When you're stopped its occassionally just as hard, but often just pretty stiff.

Does the gearchange sometimes squeak/sound like metal gringing on metal?
Sometimes

Check the gearbox fluid level I'd bet it running a bit low.
Is this under the bonnet or somewhere else?

Look on the front of the gearbox (passenger side). There will be a black butterfly screw.

I had a grande and the selector/rod underneath the plastic shield under the car was very dry, greased this and worked a treat but mine wasnt as severe as couldnt get it in gear.

My mate was told this is because you are going to fast for first gear if you get resistance even when the cluthch is depressed. It is to stop you going into first and making the engine scream when you come off the clutch.

Not sure about this explanation myself, but did try it at different speeds and it definately has resistance when changing from 2nd to 1st at higher speeds, the resistance goes if you slow down more first.

Pretty sure this is true does it on mine aswell and when cold.

You shouldn't be putting your car in first when you're moving anyway.

The best way to fill the gearbox oil is to use a length of pipe attached to a funnel. This will allow you to see when the box is full as long as you use clear pipe.

if your car is even slightly moving you should always use second, it wont stall.

If you have trouble putting it in 1st when stationary try double pressing the clutch. if your stationary you have all the time in the world so just depress the clutch twice and see if it makes a difference.

Exactly, so i think the resistance present in this case is to tell you not to put it in first?
