whats the legality

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
of selling a car with no car tax on it,
say you buy it from a dealers

i thought dealers had to provide tax before it leaves as unless its trailered away (unlikely if youve just bought a new car)

  FIAT PANDA 100HP!!!!
i beleive the above is correct, tho any person should be able to haggle some tax even if its 6 months!

im pretty sure we wernt allowed to let cars go out without tax

having some issues with my garage

  M2 Competition
Hmmm... i didnt think a garage was allowed to let a car leave the forecourt without being fully road legal? And if they do you have to sign a disclaimer saying that you know that the car isnt road legal?

  FIAT PANDA 100HP!!!!
if your buying a car, tll them you'll pull out. its the end of the month, so get as much as possible!

complain, say the salesman said there would be tax on it, unless he's a friend of course. cause some trouble!!

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
yup hes a friend, cars in the garrage atm, was on my way to pick it up and they called to say the engine management light is on and i cant have it back
just seems to be one problem after another and ive not even owned it a month yet

it would be really simple if i wasnt dealing with a friend, i feel really guilty for kicking up a fuss as i know its not directly his fault.

i know hes getting as hacked off with it as me, but i just want me car back and working properly

I don't see the problem? But thick if you buy a car without noticing it's got no tax, afterall it's driver resposibility.

they aren't allowed to let it leave the garage without tax, but it isn't their resposibility to provide it..

Edit: First thing Availablecar and the rest do is reclaim the tax on any cars traded in..

The dealers I work for are pretty stingy, they won't tax a car when we sell it unless it's put into the deal.

I don't see why a dealer should tax a car?!

Its a government fee, everydbody has to pay it.

When you buy a house, do you ask the estate agent to pay your council tax??

be a right pisser if the tax ran out 3-4 months ago,if its only just gone then i would'nt mind

Dealer should pay for everything. After all when you trade an old car in for a new one they make at least 3k on you before the apr rate kicks in

this is what i've been trying to sort today. I picked up my 172 yesterday and as the car had only just been sent down from up north somewhere the docs were still in newport head office. So I was under the impression that the tax disc was being sent down with the V5 and MOT cert. got the post today and no tax, phoned them and they said no, they don't provide it. So now i have a gorgeous 172 sitting outside that i can't drive. Rar!

Surely once you sign and pay for it then its up to you to make sure its road worthy? Like if some one buys a car privately?

read somewere a while back that they dont have to provide tax for the car, obviously they claim the money back hence why thers aint any tax on many cars in garages/dealership- secound hand cars that is...

i brought my car from a garage, no tax but gave him a price which included him to put tax on it etc

I bought my car without any tax, had ran out about a week earlier. The dealer I bought it off gave me the money for 6 months tax though lol.

Had to go and tax it myself.

You definitely don't need tax on a car when you buy it . When i bought mine it was 2 weeks off being an 06 plate . I could have had it delivered and stored it for 2 weeks in the garage but i couldn't do without a car for 2 weeks so had to tax it so its a 55 plate :( .

The dealer does not have to tax the car, end of! often when we sold cars the customer would bring there insurance cover note up and a cheque so we could tax it for them so it was legal to leave the premises. its not a legality for a garage.
