Wireless Question

  Mercedes AMG GLE 53
I have got a wireless enabled laptop which i want to use wireless. I am with virgin media cable broadband. The laptop is the only computer in the house, so is it possible to go wireless with it? If so which sort of router would i need?

Cheers

I have a belkin 54K router. My laptop works fine. My mate has two laptops on his belkin also.

Yes, you can use your laptop wirelessly no problem. The router doesnt have to be actually plugged into a pc for it to work. Just stick it somewhere out of site and you're wireless. Its pretty cool being able to use it wherever. I sat in the garden with a couple of cans doing work last summer:cool: Not adviseable in the bath though!!

I am on cable broadband so surely it must be a cable router i need?
I already have a ADSL one which i bought by mistake which is no good for me.

you already have a modem so you heve 2 choices use this modem with a router(i recommand a WRT54GL from linksys)

of you can get a wireless modem and router in 1 if you have ADSL connection(recommand a WAG200G from linksys)

i work at linksys this devices are very good without bugs, cant tell you about other brand router because i dont know them

lol I also have to make a comment. Why dont people fooking read it first. It has been said about 10 times that he has Cable broadband and NOT ADSL so he needs a cable router.

The setup will be

CABLE BOX>>>>>>>>>CABLE MODEM>>>>>>>CABLE WIRELESS ROUTER.

There is one other thing i have just remembered i should point out. Im running vista, will that make a difference as to which one i buy?

Nope shouldnt be an issue now as pretty much all routers will work with Vista.

It's basically just an ethernet wireless router, not specifically cable/ADSL, because the cable modem presents the connection over ethernet with an RJ45 plug. Whereas an ADSL router actually has a built-in modem and takes the phone line connection directly.

LOL @ all the people saying get ADSL routers when Dave said in the first post he has cable.

As for Vista, it's a router, i.e. a network device not a piece of hardware for the PC itself... as long as Vista will run the network card in the PC (which I would hope it will as the PC came with Vista), then it'll connect to whatever you connect it to quite happily.

Talk about overcomplicating what should be relatively simple :S

Well I disacgree slightly as it is specific. What you have said is correct so there is a difference lol. The majority of cable based routers have not internal modem so it cannot deal with signal being sent from the cable NTE that NTL/Virgin use so that why you still needs the original modem. Where as a ADSL BT / LLU provided service can be plugged directly into the router as the modem is pre built and then just acts a 4 port ethernet/switch with wireless capabilites.

Sorry for adding more lines lol ;)

If you have Orange then you should have a Live Box which is a wireless router anyway. So you would use your Wireless Laptop and connect to your Orange Live Box via a wireless connection.

You've basically just managed to say you disagree, and then repeat what I said

What I was saying was a cable modem takes the cable coax input and then presents the Internet connection as an ethernet connection, whether you then connect the cable to an ethernet card in a PC, or to an ethernet router. Thus a router for this is not specific to it. I could take any ethernet router and plug it into my cable modem, and I could take any cable router designed for use with a cable modem, and use it to route a random ethernet connection within reason.

As for Orange, they only issue Live boxes to new customers now, seems Brooky182 has been a customer since the pre Livebox era. The Livebox is a pile of crap anyway tbh, it only supports the weak and highly-crackable WEP encryption method, and it frequently crashes especially when put under a high pps by anything. Orange might issue you a Livebox if you asked but as Adam says I'd get an ADSL router of your choice, make sure it does WPA, preferably WPA2. Good luck soldier :D
