sata is sata totally standard power connection and data connection can not really go wrong. Unless your a fool and plug both the sata power connector and the molex connector into the drive...Seen it done the outcome is a nice burning smell as the drive explodes from too much power.

Actually, depending on the brand of the SATA drive, it could be the wrong cable.

Depending on the brand SATA drives comes with or without a molex (4-pin) power connector. If it doesn't have a molex power connector you have to use a SATA cable that supplies power as well. If it does have a molex power connector you can plug the power cable from the PSU, and use a SATA data (only) cable.

All the SATA DVD drives I've seen have three connectors. Molex, SATA data-only, and SATA data+power. You can use EITHER the molex and the SATA data-only OR the SATA data+power connectors.

Some SATA HDDs are the same with all three connectors. Others ONLY have a SATA data+power connector.

I have a SATA Data, MOLEX Power and SATA Power. I use the SATA Data obviously and a separate cable for the SATA power.
How would a SATA Data+Power work? The motherboard surely wouldn't be able to power a drive?

The only reason for the molex connector is because it makes it more compatable with the older PSU's as far as I'm aware. The best bet is to use the SATA power cable instead of the molex if you can, but just don't use both.
