Gearbox oil leak.

Noticed a small leak from the ph1 today so cleaned it underneath, thought it was just excess oil from a recenty service.

Took it out and before it was even warm the car suddenly lost power and wouldnt engage into any gear. So i pulled over and took it out of gear and put it in first realise the clutch was now slipping.

understand if the clutch had gone. but there is oil leaking around the gearbox so is it some seal which has faded/gone? and which seal would it be?

thanks

just to add the car has done 85k on the same box and clutch

SAME CLUTCH! 85k!
are those ALL motorway miles. That is the only way that clutch would go that long.
RS clutches are 40-60k normally.

Almost certain the seal has gone and the clutch is now covered in Gbox oil. New clutch, New seals (cheap) and a fair amount of labour as Gbox needs to come off.

yeah engine oil level is fine.

yeah 85k on 1 clutch lol! will be getting replaced with the gearbox re-built i think.

dunno if that'll be necessary, but whatevr makes you happy.

well the car will be used for track and its been on the same box for 85k so will be taking some abuse when on the track.

God knows how you are using it for track and have milked a clutch to 85k.

Good effort. Do you heel toe?

Can't see why a clutch shouldn't see 85k easily with "normal" use, if its the gearbox then it could be the input shaft seal. It went on my 1.6 but it just made the clutch slip I could still engage gears no problem, you have to split the box to change it which is a pain.

this is struggling with gears currently, not sure if its lack of oil there but drove it into the garage and one the way got stuck in reverse gear. Had to turn the engine off and take it out of gear. Gearbox feels all over the place aswell :S

Doesn't sound overly promising, don't think you'll be able to draw any conclusions without taking the box off tbh.
