Brands Hatch trackday in the baked bean...

Went to Brands today for a trackday on the Indy circuit. Got some second hand 15in Pro Race 1.2s with 888s to try out and was keen to see how they performed. The track was damp and slippy to begin with, but by mid-morning a dry line had been worn in apart from Druids and McLaren, which remained a bit greasy all day. There was some proper grade A weaponry on track, although it did blur the line between track day and cheap test day for millionaire race teams.

The Clio felt great all day, the tyres working brilliantly. Did a 1min 02 lap on video, might have gone a bit quicker later on but didn't have the camera on. Toying with getting camber bolts and/or Eibach Prolines to quell the body roll and help grip on turn-in, but don't want to spend hundreds on coilovers. Any advice anyone?

Sketchiest moment of the day was this V6 Calibra that some blokes had bought for £200 off ebay. They'd been off a few times during the day and were driving pretty erratically. I caught them up pretty quick during a later session but they wouldn't move over. I didn't have the grunt to overtake on the straight so had to sit behind and wait it out. Then they overtook a Fiesta on the wrong side and headed towards Paddock with me behind them. I used my normal braking point, but their lights didn't come on until about a second later. They turned in really late, understeered hideously, ploughed into the gravel but kept steering. The car dug in and flipped twice before burying itself into the tyre wall. Both of the guys inside got out, but the car was even more of a wreck than it was at the start of the day. I got the whole thing on video as well.

Anyway, here are some photos:

There were not one, not two, not three, but four of these kicking about. Two on track and two parked up. Stunning things up close.

Track day or test day? When there are Aston Le Mans racers with full pit crews and transporters in the pits, you begin to wonder. Doubt they got a clear lap all day - just six hours of traffic.

R26R press car out with Race and Track magazine. Time to get saving i think...

Going to try and upload the videos tomorrow, when i've shrunk them down a bit.

The R26R only did a few laps. Sadly didn't get any video of it. It did look to be going very well though. Apparently they're doing a test against an race-prepped R26.

Scary thing is about that car rolling, a 306 Rallye did exactly the same thing in front of me at Brands last winter! Maybe I should get rid of that Voodoo doll...

Don't think the Astons would have been testing as such. At this time of year its quite likely to have been a session for potential pay drivers to have a go in the car. Track days work quite well for this as you can essentialy leave them to it safe in the knowledge they can't go that quick and if they try any commited overtakes they'll be black flagged.

Nice one mate. You keeping those wheels on all the time now or are they just for the track?

Personally, I'd wait for coilovers. I've done days on Eibach Sports, and on coilovers. Massive difference, hate to say it, but would probably of been more economical and fun to drive to of got coilovers rather than the wheels and 888's.

They were giving passenger rides all day to people otherwise uninvolved with the track day, so you're probably right. I quite enjoyed having them there - it's not often you get to share the track with something as potent as that. Closing speeds were surprising!

Thanks for the advice. The wheels/tyres were only £270 all-in, so not really coilover money. I hear what you're saying though.

Astons should have the GP section open just for them, indy circuit is a bit of a waste..

Reckon he was feeling the heat and didn't want to let anyone through. No apexes were harmed during the course of his track day! Didn't see them hit one all day!

I did my 1st Track day at Brands last year, Great fun and the Clio I found really comes into its own showing up some of the bigger more powerful cars...

Did that Calibra over take the Fiesta on the "Wrong Side" just before he binned it?

I got the full CD with all my Photos on from the day http://www.petrol-junkies.com/Brands%20Hatch%20Photos/

Take your Auto Door locking off on Track last thing you want is to end up trapped and the marshals not being able to get into the car if the worse happens.

J: Photos look great. Love the silver Cups. Good point about the Auto-locks. Hadn't thought about that. Touch wood.

Yeah, the Calibra overtook the Fiesta on the wrong side. They nearly collided because the Fiesta was moving over for me and must have assumed the Calibra was going into the pits. It was very close.

Had someone driving like that in our session, he was out in a Shed of a Celica 2.0 GTI thing, so many people complained about his driving he got Black Flagged and asked to leave....

At least driving like a c**k, ended up only affecting the Calibra driver ;)

Loving that Caterham thing in the first couple of minutes!!

I love track days when you feel like your making really go progress and then one of them goes past like your in reverse!!

  Turbos.
PMSL @ the Calibra! Forgot about braking then...

P.S. Leave the pischy trackday 'theorectical' line at Druids, go straight for apex after the bridge!

Were there any pics of your inside wheel co*ked in the air? I did a Airfield day a month ago. Pushed fairly hard and out of all the pictures there was not one of my wheel in the air. Gutted.
Supposse i'l have to try harder at Bedford in Feb :)
