New to the forum, 1.2 clio engine change ;)..

  R5 GTT EFI Clio.
Hi Guys,

Would 1st off like to give you a little bit of information about myself then onto me car :), my name is Nick Harding, i am 16, nearly 17 so will be on the road soon.

You guys have pulled together a fantastic forum full of valuable information and am proud that i am now a part of it :).

When i pass my test in December/Jan, my parents are giving me a Renault Clio 1.2 8V 2002 model, I want to lower it, but am unsure if i can do it on the standard shocks/springs? and also, how much should i lower it by?, looking at the arches its pretty high, but looking at the bottom of the front bumper, its pretty low.

Here are some pics of my car.. (Sorry in advance for poor quality, phone pics)..

I need to sort the front bumper and bonnet out as my dad hit a duck doing about 60 through a lane late one morning on the way to work, so ignor that.

I am currently trying to source a Renault 5 GT Turbo engine, i know them like the back of my hand, gonna strip down, completly rebuild it, T25 front end / T2 Back end turbo, going to be converting it from Carb to EFI also :) and planning to drop that in it, should be good for 230 Break :)

Any ideas of mods i can do in the time while i am looking for an engine?

cheers,

Nick.

nice car as it is for a first.

i presume you have the money to afford fitting, costs and insurance when 17? if so then fair play, if not concentrate on getting it to look great and worry about power in years to come... lowered and colour coded it'll look great anyway

welcome

You will not be able to get insured on it with a bigger engine n it. not properly anyhow.

Learn to drive for a couple of years then up the power.

Fitting and Costs i can do my self, my folks are doing the insurance :) I built a renault 5 gt turbo with my brother, who is now 31, but all the same, ive got full access to my dads workshop/garage which is fully kitted with pretty much any tool you need for a job like this :)

  Storm Grey 200
Lower is 60mm with an apex kit for looks

But prepared to be raped for insurance...

Also stick to the 1.2 until you can handle the power

Ive ridden my old mans GSXR 1100 and driven a Rally spec subaru so power is fine, just cant be dealing with lack of power with the 1.2 LOL

If you can pass your test, then fit and insure that engine in there, then you must have fantastic testicles, like really fantastic.

I mean, i have the money to slide a rather big engine in mine, and insure it, but i just don't have the balls. So fair play to you.

I wont be going it alone, i will be having my brothers and dads help dropping it in, sorting the breaks ect, but building the engine and converting it to EFI ill be going it alone on that one as my little project :) ... Ill have to get hold of my bro when he is back from spain on the 12th and get some pics of his 5 engine we built, that was something special, i think we got some printed ones, ill have a look now and scan them :)

Sounds like a cool little project if you can do it, Hopefully you will be able to insure it and make it look how you want, Its just every 17 year olds dream comes to and end when they realise how much insurers want for mods.

Anyway i dont want to piss on your strawberrys so good luck.

Lower it on Ebaich sportlines springs (you can keep the standard shocks so ive read), Colour code it, Get some silver indicators and the usual mods and it should be a nice little motor.

Tempted to leave the 1.2 badge on the side so any turds who think its only a 1.2 lets over take, will be shocked when i drop a cog and are gone, here are some more pics..
just put the turbo together as a mock, im waiting for the rebuild kit to arrive and my shaft, but this is how it will sit, got my old man to shot blast it housings in work. In one of the shots the actuator is linked up, but i cant have it like this as the output pipe would be right next to the exhaust, so have to use a different actuator, There is also a image of a flange ive made so a pipe can be put onto it, its only rough at the mo, will tidy it up later and get dads make to wend it up tomorrow, so update tomorrow.

And finially, there is a pic of my fuel rail before i get the boss's machined and the mounts to go to the inlet manifold :).

What do you mean colour code it? ..get rid of the black strips and wing mirrors and have them the same colour as the car?

Yep, Paint the side strips, Front and rear black bumper insert to match the colour or the car. DIY or get them to a body shop. Or you might decide you like em black.

Also RS grille is a good little mod.

Search non-sports in the media section, Theres a good thread on non sport mods.

Yep!

Get rid of all the black.

Welcome, will be a good project if you get it going.. doubt you'll get insured legally though!

I do like them black but it has always made me wonder what would look better, I definatly want to lower it though, and dont really like the wheels, they were off my brothers 5 at one time, and the tyres went bold on the clio, and they were in the loft with a new set on, so i just put them on for the time being.

Im going to fit a CD player and some half decient sound system so my tunes sound ok.

RS grille??

He doesnt have one in the pics, can get them from renault although sometimes they ask for a reg num :( and they are £50 now

'kids these days' lol well if you do it good luck to you mate, but you might have to be prepared to just sit and look at it till your about 25 :)

Gotta shell out sometimes if you want it to look nice, although i know a man who ownes a scrap yard that owes me a favor or 2, and i know for a fact he has just recieved a blue wrote off (rear end job) 182 yestoday, so will give him a bell tomorrow see if he can sort anything out for me :)

Watching a R5 gtt engine on Ebay at the mo, its at 100, gonna wait to see what it gets close to towards the end, i dont think the price is gonna move.... We will soon see.;)

Legend :), Well just dropped a mail off to one of my dads mates to see if he will weld up the flange and pipe i made so the boost pipe can join the T25 Compressor housing, hoping for dad to come home from work tomorrow and say thats fine,

Also just made the gasket for it with some gasket paper my dad brought home from work, should do the job.

Need to sort the girlfriends birthday out 1st, 24th of august, hoping to have all her stuff for the end of this month so i can plough into my project :).

Nick.

You seem very grown up for a 16 year old, and actually seem like you have a clue about cars, unlike some of the young gimps that come on here. Good luck with your project, insurance will be a killer though, check it first!

Although you should still take it easy as you won't have road experience I too learned to drive years before I was old enough to on wasteland and empty car parks etc and it teaches you how cars handle very well, more so the higher powered the car.

Still take it easy if you go ahead with this ;)

iimushroomzii: Thanks, really looking forward to this, I cant really check the insurance before i do it as i cant be sure of what mods i will be adding to the car, i got a rough idea though.
Griff. : It was around a closed track :)

Aluco: Thanks, im just really excited, me and my bro dropped many of engines into his R5 GTT, he is currently building a F7P engine to drop into a R5 GTT, so when i cant do work on mine, i do work on his :)

Still waiting for a email back from my welder :)

Cool parents then :)

I've had 4 5 turbo's. Wicked little cars and easily tuned. My fella's old Clio GT was top of the 1/4 leader board last time iirc.

Only problem is, your going to have a quick first car and therefore you won't go below that again. Boost is addictive LOL.

Good luck with the project and look forward to the finished result.
