hey folks

just a wee quick question later next month is the time when i can go out and chose a clio

im sharing the girlfriends car and its a 1.8 astra sri it feels quite slow and with just reading a few posts and threads the little clio seems to punch above its weight

my brothers got an 08 CTR will it be able to match that for speed and what about other quick wee cars like the cooper s,leon or ibiza fr,corsa VXR,golf GTI can the clio live with these cars

cheers guys

  Arctic 182 + yozza
depends entirely on the driver.

but it'll sit with ctr, cooper s and vxr's if you drive it right.

  R26
Tbh in the corners you'll have no problems, standard v standard I'd imagine it would do ok aswell in a straight line.

  Audi A4 1.8T Sport
they had a Mini Cooper S against a Clio 172 Cup on 5th Gear, the Clio won on the track because of the handling, but the Mini was quicker in a straight line. only just tho.

That doesn't sound right, the Clio should be quicker straight line too. The Mini Cooper S Gen 1 were only 163bhp, power to weight of 143bhp/ton. Evo recorded the 0-100 time of 19.9 for the Mini and 17.3 for the 172 Cup.

Yeah, 182 is dedo a bit quicker in a straight line than the Gen 1 MCS, to my mate's disappointment!

This argument will go on for ever as they always do! :rasp:

But imo my standard mini was neck and neck with a standard 182 and easily quicker with a few mods on

  MCS R56
Yeah, these arguments can go on but in my experience the standard SC'd Mini was a touch slower than my 172 Cup. The turbo one will be very close but the older version was a bit disappointing in terms of pace I thought, especially at higher speeds. Not enough in it to make a song and dance about. All the hot hatches are similar on pace, standard.

That's probably the only downfall with the Clio - the lack of tuning potential at reasonable cost, engine-wise. Hence all the "strip it" advice.

The Leon's, Golfs, VXR's - all very similar pace.

VXR = much much quicker in a straight line drag + END OF.

Fortunately for us, straights lines don't occur very often unless you are at santa pod.

All of the above versus a Trophy in the twisties = you decide, but my car on fresh tyres....................bring it on.

Depends what you call much quicker. I don't think there is that much between them - maybe in gear.

Fcuk the twisties - 90% driver. 10% car.

Put lewis hamilton in a 1.2litre corsa vs me in an M3 and ill piss your ratio out the window

All the cars mentioned above are all pretty close in real world performance terms tbh. Try as many as you can, I found the Clio the most fun out of what I tried and thats what matters to me:cool:

  Scirocco 2.0 tsi
The one thing most of those cars have over the clio is the turbocharger and therefore the tuneability of them for not alot of cash, in the corners yes the clio will have them all, but on any straight or in gear, it would struggle against alot of them imo.

As an example I drive an ibiza Fr, 150bhp 180lb/ft torque standard, I had it remapped straight to 215bhp/260lb/ft torque for 300 quid (I have RR printouts to prove this) I can pull on a standard Astra VXR now.

Your not going to be racing young idiots in Saxo's etc, are you?

IMO there is no point in comparing standard versus modified.

There isn't and there is. It depends on the point, as many (probably the majority) people mod their Clio with a remap and/or filter and and get small gains compared to the turbo'd cars - so both are modded cars. Mod both cars for say £500 and the Clio will be struggling, in terms of pace compared to a VXR or such like.

vs 1.8 astra = 182 win both straight / twists
CTR = even to 100mph, civic will pull away thereafter, even i twists
cooper S = 182 win marginally in straight, leave it on the twists
Ibiza FR = 182 win
corsa vxr = 182 win marginally on straight, leave it on twists
golf gti = 182 win marginally
focus st = 182 loose on straight and the focus will keep up in the twists

This twisties theory is bs and should be quashed. Track aside, there are no cars on that list that would 'left' in the twisties, other than a Astra 1.8.

1.8 Astra - why bother?

  Scirocco 2.0 tsi
That is also a very opinionated list as there have been a fair few heated debates on here regarding the gti and vxr, both of those come down to the driver.

Btw gaz, ibiza's FTFW!!!!

Does everyone on this forum do track days?

If not what sort of roads do you lot drive on?!

This whole twisties thing is cringey as f**k.

I still disagree mate, whats the point in saying "my Ibiza will pass a Astra VXR with £££ spent on it..." well aye id expect it to.

Id also expect a Clio 182 with a super/turbo charger to give an M3 a hard time, do you see where im coming from?

Once fettled with, there is really no argument as to "whats quicker" in real world terms, out of the box/factory is where it matters IMO!

I appreciate what your saying and can see where your coming from, im sure we have been here before lol ;)

EXACTLY. Pushing you car 100% on public roads is idiotic. You can never take a corner fast, because if theres another car coming the other way on the same corner. Your fucked.

Yeah man. I think you can still compare them but I get you, modded is modded, std is std.

Got a mate who has a mk5 Gti and we both booted it on the motorway and I pulle past him with ease, that was in the 200 though but 182 = less weight

At the end of the day, out of your list, a 182 is quite possibly going to be the cheapest to buy, insure, run out of all its competitors on that list. You can't decide until you've drove them all really. Which ever is fastest is irrellevent unless your planning on doing trackdays. Racing other cars on the road is idiotic. Pushing anyone of those cars to their limits on a daily basis on public roads and very soon you'll either end up banned or dead.

I have driven ctr, golf Gti, cupra r, bocanegra, Corsa and astra vxr

golf Gti = quick but don't realise it because of how sturdy and well built it is
ctr = too fancy and really didn't like having to rev the tits off it for any power
cupra r and bocanegra = both awesome but abit mundane and boring
corsa vxr = awesome in a straight line, puts a smile in ur fancy but horendous understeer
astra vxr = savagly quick but front end it very understeery
Clio 200 = best of the lot by a mile, yes the Gti is better built but the Clio is so much fun to drive and will reward u with massive lols and grins.
if the 182 is anything like the 200 then it's a winner in my book and it's by far the best looking...

Can't believe I'm saying this but who gives a toss about who's is faster, it's your car, go drive it and have fun ffs

Fair play mate, how is the Ibiza fairing up on the diesel after the re-map? Better/worse?

No issues and it's certainly got a bit more poke at 2000rpm and will pull through to 5k, whereafter the power disappears and it sounds like a broken tractor. Nightmare in the wet though! Might be shat tyres but it's all over the place and can spin up in 4th!

Drove through to Glasgow last weekend and hit the road works with the average speed cameras - averaged 63mpg over the whole journey, which was nice!

How's the Sport?
