Coolant level, rising when car is hot....

Ive allways been under the impression coolant needs topping up when car hasnt been used and is cold but when car is cold its just above min line (making me think i need to put a little bit more in) then when the car has been drivin it rises to just under the max line
Should i therfore when topping up from cold not fill all the way to the max line?

But yeah, you always fill things up when the car is cold.
