Is this a good or bad idea? I didn't do my windscreen or windows when I recently polished and waxed my car because I thought you'd need special glass stuff.

Polishing/waxing glass with the same products used on rest of car

It's not a precise science to be honest. I have used SRP and other polishes on my glass for years and never had any issues. In the same respect, I have used waxes on my front screen before and never had any issues.
However, there are specific glass polished (Auto Glym Glass Polish being one example) and specific glass sealants.
What are you trying to achieve and what is your budget?

Minimal budget really, I thought waxing the windows might help with water run off in the rain?
The windscreen is pretty scratched too but I'm not sure I've got the arm power to polish them out!!

Waxing the windows will help rain run off. However, some people have experienced issues with waxes clouding the windscreen, which is obviously not something you want. There are therefore, as mentioned, specific window sealants.
With regards to polishing, no you won't be able to hand polish the scratches out. Again, there are specific glass polishes. AG Glass polish will be a good start, but for correction, you will need to look at machining. If it's that bad, I would just look at replacing the glass.
