Dial next to traction Button?

This may be silly but ive allways wondered what its for!? Bext to the traction button on the little square panel, it makes the dash and speedo lights dim or bright....
is that all its for?

I've always thought that it's bloody pointless, untill I was driving on a pitch black motorway with no other cars around,
after a while the dials were doing my head in as my eyes had adjusted to the darkness and they seemed too bright.

Only time i've ever used them tbh as I don't drive at night normally, I generally like to stay in and drink heavily.

I don think its there to be used over and over par say, its so you can set the level of the dash lights to suit your eyes, as everyone have a differnt level of light sensitivity... so id hardly call it 'pointless'
