Hi guys I'm wanting to upgrade my master cylinder and wondering what my options are...

Its not straight forward, the car is a Renault 5 GT Turbo, however it is running a Clio Cup Servo Unit. So I was looking at buying a 172 cup Master Cylinder as this is bigger than the GT one 22mm v's 19mm... But I was thinking that if I'm at it I might aswell go as big as possible... I was reading THIS thread and noticed you can use a 197/200 master cylinder. Is there such a thing as a 197/200 cup whch doesnt have ABS? Also would a master cylinder from a car with ABS not work on a car with no ABS?

Cheers Ashy.

406 coupe v6 master cylinder fits and it's 23.8 mm size I think, plus it has 4 ports for no abs

Cool thanks, is that the same as was used on page 2 of THIS thread?

Only reason I ask is that the standard brake line fittings on a GTT are M10 on all 4 pots. The master cylinder on the above thread has 2 x M10 and 2 x M12 ports which I understand is the same as a 172 setup?

However, according to THIS thread, it sounds like the 197/200 Master Cylinders have the same 4xM10 ports which would save me changing the brake lines...

Just becasue they are the old steel lines so would need to be changed anyway.

Im sure a 172 cup or none abs has all m10 fitting. On a 406 or 806 master van the master cylinder from 99year I think that has 4 ports with all m10 fittings, i'll try and get a link to the eBay one I bought

The 197/200 m.c has only 2ports as they all come with abs, I think you can put a t piece in but I wouldn't tbh, if it is m12 then it is easy enough to make some new lines and fittings for m12

Are you sure? Can you confirm? Reason I ask is I've ordered one from Reno and its non-returnable... If it doesnt do the job I'll be stuck with a £100.00 paper weight :(

It defo has 2 ports, I pm'd the guy in the previous thread ages ago to check before I did it and he told me it has 2 ports

Just incase anyone is ever doing something similar in the future I have now spent a small fortune on Master Cylinders from Reno to save you the cost in the future....

So heres the info:

I bought a 197 Master Cyinder - Its actually 4 Ports, so would be a direct fit but the position of the ports are different to the R5 / 172 MS although they are all M10x1.0.

Part number 7701208880 - Lis Price £77.62

I also bought a 172 Cup Master Cyinder.

Part number 7701205739 - Lis Price £88.29

Now two of the ports are M10x1.0 the same as the R5 but two are M12x1.0. So Insead of changing the brake line fittings I made some brass adaptors to allow fitment of the standard brake pipes..

So I think I'll just go with the 172 cup MS and see how that performs!

So you kept the original brake lines in the end?

I want to remove the abs from my 172 so need to find out what fittings the abs pump uses.

Could you knock up a few more of the brass fittings Ashy?
