TDC sensor life expectancy?

Hey everyone

Just managed to find the paperwork for when the TDC sensor and loom was changed on my 172, it was 3 years ago. It seems to be showing similar symptoms again now (not starting when hot, etc) so I was just wondering if it would be worth replacing it again? Is it possible it could be related to something else? I haven't a clue how long something like that should last.

Unlikely but possible, also depends whether the updated (blue) sensor and connector were fitted as these are updated parts which shouldn't cause repeat issues if fitted correctly.

Thanks for your reply fraz. It's got the updated blue sensor, and the loom piece thats been soldered on. Im starting to think the problem might be elsewhere now.

Has anyone else had any problems with the updated sensor and loom?

What are your symptoms and i might be able to help.....? Non starting when hot,does immob light come on and go out,does the engine turn over and not fire? Have you checked anything?

Thanks Fraz. Yeah that’s pretty well it, starts every time when cold in the mornings, but try to start it while still technically 'hot', and it cranks over fine, but doesn't fire. The immobiliser on the dash panel and the light by the gear stick are fine, they go out with all the other lights.

I haven't done much to diagnose it specifically. I’ve only had it since October, and the battery on it was too small, so I got the correct size one. I’ve done a service on it, and that’s it really. Was hoping it would be the TDC sensor playing up, but as its had the new modified one, I was thinking it might be something else. Do you know of any other parts/sensors that could cause these symptoms?

I'd take the top inlet off and have a look at the condition of the spark plugs first....Have they been replaced?

Yeah, I replaced these with the service, however I need to get the rocker cover gasket done, as it had leaked into 2 of the cylinders, im planning on having the cambelt done early next year, and as its a cambelt off job to do the gasket, thought it would make sense to have it all done at the same time. The symptoms haven't really changed since doing the plugs unfortunately
