Engine temp sensor!!!!

hey folks

hoping someone knows the problem or better the solution
couple of weeks ago i took the motor in for a new clutch (350 quid)
but they isolated the car (good lads) but didnt put my radio code in, also i noticed a problem
my engine temp seemed to be alot lower almost as if the car was cooler?
never sits that low but when im idle the car temp sensor (manual one) goes higher up
only when idle though
does anyone know the cause??

I don't know if I translated this right, but you mean to say the temp gauge needle goes up when idling, and down again in gear or something?

This is just one of the things this could be translated in tbh..

So it runs nice an cool whilst driving an only raises when stationary? Sounds like the thermostat could be stuck open chap.

pretty much mate, sorry i got caught up typing it out i amnt sure what the issue is but when im driving it sits well under the average and when idiling it sits fine it only happend after i got my new clutch

thanks for the reply buddie, is this a bad fault can it damage any engine components or is it just a tiny wee thing not to worry about??

It'll effect your fuel economy as the engine will not be getting up to optimun tempreture, also the fact it will be constantly getting hot then cold again isn't the best really as the constant tempreture change can have effect on materials over time.

I think a thermostat is no more then 16quid from renault an then just some coolant an water. Not a particualy hard job really, clios are fairly easy to bleed. Theres to bolts holding it in an its just a matter of draining the coolant by pulling off the bottom rad hose.

thanks for the reply, i checked about earlier and i tried taking the coolent like jug top off and leaving the car to heat up, it got upto idle temp perfect then i screwed the lid on ( i also noticed the fan didnt come on, any thoughts on that??) i left it for a good 20-30 mins
and i drove the car for abit and the temp gauge stayed at the perfect temp and i havnt lost any coolent ( i put a pencil mark just incase)
any thoughts??

So its running at normal temp now? (halfway/smidge above)

As for the fan I rarely find they cut in, especially in this weather unless in heavy traffic that is.

yeah the engine temp colour changed from a light red to a dark red and it was sitting fine, maybe wonkey gauge or electrics??
it seemed to be running really good gave the car a good blast to try get it up to temp to i tend not to high rev alot
i amnt losing coolent oils really good

because the problem only happend once they isolated the car maybe worth taking the battery connections off and resetting it?

Light red to dark red? If its running fine now just leave it for the time. As long as its not over heating an you have no loss of fluids I wouldn't worry. If the fault persists again then dig deeper

lol its sitting 1 notch sometimes 2 under idle it isnt major its never went over luckily :)

if its sitting under the halfway mark on the gauge its more then likely over cooling an the stat could be stuck open.

I take it its sitting there all the time

it varies goes up when i stop, drops sometimes bellow then back up again

To be honest mate, I'd take the thermostat out an boil it up in some water see if it functions correctly.

If no then put a new one in with some fresh coolant. If I was to look at the car I could quickly diagnose it no doubt but I'll do my best on here for you.

If its not the thermostat you really need to be checking operation of the coolant tempreture sensor. To do this you need to check the resistance across the CTS with a multimeter an see the values alter as the water changes tempreture, fairly easy to do an if you do a quick google they'll be a guide no doubt or hanynes do make some good auto electrical books with plenty of easy to read stuff in.

That is abit low, does it fluctuate much? Does it rise in traffic? Does it fall when moving? If yes to all these try a thermostat.

Yeah rises maybe a notch then back down usually sits one below and rises in traffic and when i drive on it goes down, would this fault cause any damage to the car???I think I know my weekend matey thanks for your help
Is real way of getting to thermostat or roughly how much would Reno charge ?

Its runnig cool but I wouldn't worry to much atleast its holding some heat lol.

The thermostat is easy to change, I've never changed one on the 1.2 16v but its more then likely located at the cyclinder head end of the top hose.

I explained earlier in the thread the process of changine one too, there no more then 20 quid from renault an I'd only buy one from renault too.
