Ph1 stop light

Hi this is going to sound like a stupid question I bought a ph1 172 last night all good little car very pleased with it but noticed that my stop light comes on when the handbrake light comes on (when handbrake is applied) could this be telling me a brake fault or is this a wiring bodge to cover up a constant stop light?
