Yes ! there is a pressure sensor in the system which will stop the compressor running if its low / empty.
It is quite unlikely the compressor is knackered as the oil in the system usually collects there.
take it to an air con specialist and they will vac it down to see if theres a leak before...

Thanks for response, it does it when I turn the engine over by hand. I am quite new to Renault engines and haven't had experience of tensioners like this before. (used to mk2 golfs where there is a solid tensioner!) I assume then its there to keep a constant tension on the belt?

Just about to re-fit cams and valve train to overhauled head, hit has had valve seats re-cut and new Supertech valves.
Have read about problems some people have had with the tappets staying jacked open and not allowing valves to close fully resulting in no compression and misfire...

Ok, as a follow on from original question - thanks for replies - machining has been completed and I need to fit the new jets! is it just a case of tapping them in with a drift and should I put some sort of retaining compound (Loctite) on them too?
