Yes ! there is a pressure sensor in the system which will stop the compressor running if its low / empty. It is quite unlikely the compressor is knackered as the oil in the system usually collects there. take it to an air con specialist and they will vac it down to see if theres a leak before...

I have used this loads of times on race engines and never had a problem with it. As Dan said, fitting in a vice and hot water is the way. Do not put jubillee clips on, the stuff is not designed for it, if you tighten them enough to have any effect the ridges on the fitting will start to cut...

How can regular oil changes affect the life expectancy of a part that isnt lubricated? I would suspect it is more related to how the car is driven.
