I've just got back from an MOT center and my poor 172 failed on a few things .. one of which is a headlight issue where when the selector is turned down 2 positions ( over riding the xeon auto on function) only the drivers side beam works ..
Logic points that the bulb cant be blown...
This happens all the time regardless if the engines warm or not .. if anything better cold as the mixture is richer and the car seems a little more poky.

I recently had some minor work done on my car main - match so nothing to heavy. However now I have lost loads of power and under heavy throttle the car sounds awful. it sounds like it struggling to breathe - be it intake or outlet... cant really tell. ..

I have the same issue - recently had Sportline springs fitted and at the time the car was sharp.. now the front feels like jelly and dare I say Im not confident driving it..
It thinkmy shocks are gone and only lastest a while on the new springs.. so heavens sake get new shocks as well.

For anyone thinking about getting some engine work done .. heres my experince and thoughts on what i had so far.

Last week I checked out the air filter to find it was filthy..
Since then I noticed a slight pitch in engine note and a flat spot while toeing it.
To see if my fiddlerling had upset anything I remembered a simple trick a tuners showed me to test induction weakage.
Just spary WD40 around...
from the strut out of boot .. there is a wash 2mm thick approx then white rubber .. defo poly in feel.. followed by another washer as below...
not saying this is the correct config but feels bloody good .. if im mnot online tomo then dont copy above config ..
All in all the feel is firm and you get a direct feed back in your arse.. /stop sniggering.
Not having Koni up front I will be addressing this as I can actively feel the weak points up front ..
