My Old 185(ish)bhp Clio NA on a RS2 inlet lapped 5 seconds quicker around Mallory park than my Leon running 370bhp 😂

I think Clio needs to NA. I’d spend money on proper suspension, get rid of rubber bushes for rose joints etc or get an R26

Turbo for me. Get a boost solenoid too and the power delivery can be mapped a lot more progressive - less torque slap down low and more power top end. There is still a huge surge of torque over N/A though so there's no denying it's a turbo when driving it. Epic to drive!

My friend and I both have turbo Clios. Check out my thread if you have days to waste, turbo stuff is last few pages.

He has 230ftlbs and 230bhp. 7psi no solenoid
Mine has 220ftlbs and 245bhp. 7psi with MAC solenoid
Same dyno. (ED)

My advice would be not to cut corners and try and do it with cheap bits - top quality parts only. (not that you would - i've seen your thread!)

The only reason I did mine initially was the kit came in 'cheap' second hand with a couple of bits missing. Admittedly I spent a few quid along the way to change sub standard parts, new service parts to keep reliability at its best, and then went standalone Adaptronic.

It ended up on a stock bottom end with 262hp 219ft/lbs torque and was reliable in just over a year of it boosted. I had my fun with it then moved onto something completely different to circumstances at the time.

The biggest difference for me was not having to deal with the turbo oil feeds, water feeds, exhaust manifolds all with potential for coming loose, leaking, weeping. Once that SC kit was bolted on all bar changing the drive belt to a shorter one it was absolutely fine

Looking at Supercharging my 1o7, got one of the last bracket sets from proline. Car will be 90% used on the Nordschleife no road use really, love the feel of an NA car just want more power really. Not chasing after big numbers

Ease of figment and reliability is what I'm looking for but with increased power.

When you guys said it felt restricted at low revs do you mean it doesnt draw as much air as it would NA? Like its struggling for air low down?

Also I'm guessing the peak power is at red line?

Turbo can be reliable, I’m proof. Do it well! Too many pricks slapping them together and hoping for the best!

5+ years of driving daily, track days, nur/spa trips, full days of abuse! Agree with short slower tracks there isn’t much advantage to turbo over a very well setup Clio 182 track car, but... faster tracks like spa/Nür it’s very necessary! Boring as hell screaming between 4th and 5th in an N/A clio to keep up 120+ in up hill/long sections! [emoji23][emoji23]

Flat out of the lauda-link at Berwek, up Kesselchen, screaming in 4th gear, grab 5th and watch the speed start to fall off again. #facepalm
Back to 4th and hang it on the limiter all the way to the top. Hahaha

Yeah where as now I’m pinging on the limiter in 5th needing another cog! [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

So from what I have learnt after reading both @Cub. @Ricardos build threads....

Making sure the timing is perfect is paramount!
250bhp 220lbs is a safe working track power region.
The chargers oil reservoir needs to be level or below the charger so it doesnt over pressurise the system.
Meg key wayed crank pulley, injectors and plugs are required.
Ph1 fuel rail, pipes and sender with an uprated fuel pump.

I'm currently running..

Engine

Jenvey 48mm bodies
Gen90 ECU
182 mani, full custom slip jointed exhaust
GroupN timing
Meg injectors
Magnicor leads
PMS oil catch can
VW rad
Samco water pipes
Light weight crank, waterpump and alternator pulleys
Lightened flywheel standard clutch
New belt, dephaser, waterpump, plugs, stretch belt for pas and aircon delete with PMS brackets for alternator.

To change to a charger most of the kit I already have. Gen 90 will run it, meg injectors I have.
But why the ph1 fuel setup?

Also the charger bolts in where the aircon was, my alternator is currently sat down there with the PMS delete kit. Do you get brackets to move it up higher?

And my main concern is reliability of the charger itself ???

So I've made up my mind regarding using a second hand SC.

With no warranty and idea how the unit has been treated prior regarding fluid changes and correct fitment plus mileage put on it I dont want that risk.

Still interested but I'd have to buy new.

Alternatively I could fit the gripper final drive with meg 5th. 197 pistons and some for of cams. Probably jumping from 197bhp to 210ish maybe. It would be reliable and very usable power with the shorter ratios.

Thoughts/ input greatly appreciated

For the sake of 10 horse, I'd rather just put my money into the gearbox instead.

I mean to do the final drive and the engine work.

If I'm taking the box out I'll just drop the full engine again and rebuild completely.
ACL bearing, arp bolts all that good stuff. 197 pistons should be fit and forget they are OE, aswell as the cams not sure which though?
Maybe vernier pulleys??? I dont know.

Its £4700 for a new charger kit with 80bhp and 60ish lbs upgrade.

Technically I've got the ECU and gen tuner software which is £1200 and injectors which is £120ish.
So I'm down to like £3400 for the other bits

  Hi comp phase 1
What about going down the 197/200 head route with cams..197 pistons in your block. @NorthloopCup cup was epic with that setup. Think it was 230bhp and a load more torque. Pretty sure that was with out itb’s as well.

Regarding the use of the phase 1 fuel system I was told its a more stable setup for running boost.

There is a rotrex supporters group on facey and people have successfully repaired and even upgraded these chargers. I'm just waiting for one to come up at the right price

So been talking with Mark and we have basically dropped the charger idea. 3.5k for the kit is just crazy.

So the options are now...

Low boost turbo 230bhp 230lbs £2500 ish and bolts to a standard engine.

Hybrid, 182 block and bottom end with 197 head and induction, 197 pistons, angry cams. 215/220ish 180lbs £unknown.

Angry cams in what I have now but will probably need valves and springs.£unknown 210bhp lbs?

Remember I want reliability, not pulling the engine every other track day because theres an issue.

Ok, debate.....

Personally I’d go low boost turbo. You know you’ll achieve your power/torque goals.
Just focus on the usual problem areas so things like effective turbocharger support, improved hardwearing for feeds and drains. Go OTT on heat management and cooling.
Turbo motors arrived very effective and reliable if built properly.
For the cost, it’s hard to ignore given the options.
