182 engine swap into 1.2



  1.2 mk2 renault clio
Been thinking about swapping my clios engine to a 182 recently as i like my clio and would like to keep it but is lacking in power so thoight i would just see if anyone else has had experience in this

I'm guessing you've recently passed and bored of the power? Save the money for a 182 and when insurance lets you pal. Boring old man answer i know, but we've all been there

Fair enough just wundering if it was even worth it cause if it was just a drop in job then i would probably just do it for a project

If its a project your after, why not look for a 172/182 that needs a bit of work doing? spend the next year or two tarting it up ready.

If i could find one close by at the right price i would. Had the same plan with a mx5 last year but never found the right one

Definitely the better option.

Plus at your age, I'd guess that the standard 1*2 insurance would be bad, When you tell them that it's a heavily modified 1.2, the zeroes will just start to get added to the premium.

Some younger people have said modified insurance for them wasn't too bad, it's at least worth looking at a quote.

I guess people just don't do that much to their cars anymore, or they do something like a remap, but keep quiet about it so the insurance companies never know.

I reckon if i was to do it i would just keep it quite and see when the insurance needs to renew how much it would be

This, if you stack it the police will come down on you like a ton of bricks. Licence losing stuff.

If you stack it and hurt someone you'll be spending a decent stretch inside.

You don't need someone else telling you the same stuff again, BUT how about buying a not-perfect 182 and reshelling it with your 1.2...
Similar idea but then you're still keeping your car, but you've got all the bits to swap across, such as suspension, wider wings, gearbox, rear beam with discs etc etc

Thats a class idea just turn the 1.2 into a 182

21 yr old still in Uni here. I'm in a similar boat with my 1.4 8 valve Clio. At first I planned on engine swapping it (when I have the money), I even considered the 136hp F4R from the Megane 2 as those are commonly found here but I realised it would probably cost the same if not more than just buying a 172/182 already complete (if I sold my 1.4 to subsidise the cost), and this way I wouldn't risk the puny brakes from fading after 1 pull like it would if I just swapped a 2.0 16V into my current car. Plus the better suspension ofc.

My only concern is in South Africa (where I am), the regular Clio 2 is relatively popular, but the 172/182s are quite uncommon, so I fear replacement parts will be difficult to find and/or expensive. Also, my Clio 2 is a Phase 1 and I've grown very much attached to the Phase 1 front-end as a result, but Phase 1 172s are even rarer than the already rare Phase 2s, so I may have to settle for the big eyed Ph2 front-end (which I've also come to like in RS trim).

If you're from the UK then you're definitely better off selling your 1.2 and buying a 172/182.

I've personally carried out the swap, I have a F4R in my 1.2 5 door, I can say its a pain in the ass, But i managed to score a crashed 182 for only £1000 so it was worth it for me

A 5-door 182? We need to see pics! I actually wished Renault also offered it as a 5-door, so much so that I already edited a 172 Ph1 picture into a 5-door:

Obviously doesn't look as sporty as a 3-door but instead of comparing it to a regular 172, I like to compare it to a 5-door non-sport, and consider how much nicer it looks than those!
