The 'I work in I.T' thread

Currently going through workforce reductions... 10% cut across the entire company.

I have a meeting at 4PM today with my manager and HR to discuss my 'status' - Been playing on my mind all weekend, I've been through several lay-off cycles before, but this one feels different - I've seen people who I'd never imagine being impacted break the news they're leaving!

I worked for an amazing manager previously, a true servant leader... Since he retired 12 months ago, our group has been bounced around 4 different managers, without the knowledge or experience to lead our group - I worry this will have a major play in decisions being made, simply not understanding the impact of their actions.

Hit me up, if you hear of any senior IT roles (Infrastructure leadership, technical product management, server / storage / DC management, manufacturing systems integration etc.) in Derbyshire and surrounding areas... Remote / hybrid position ideally!
Just clicked who this is. Im sure someone will take you easy and you will flying again. You opened a curious thought of joining your old place, didnt work out but ended up going somewhere else and really enjoy it. For that i am greatful.

However chin up and you wont be out of work for long.
PS - The current place you work for, well, they aren't exactly "flying high" the now are they, so i expect it will cut much deeper as more failures come out.

Hey Adam... Ahh, that's a blast from the past - I remember us briefly talking! You dodged a bullet there, <18 months later global IT was outsourced to IBM, total mess. Glad you're in a good role now!

I've had a number of people contact me and set-up meetings since posting on LinkedIn yesterday, that's given me a 'boost'.. I've got a lengthy notice period to serve, hopefully will secure something near term! Just crappy timing 4 weeks until Christmas

Is there also an option of voluntary redundancy? A lot of people I know, took the VR when they had a job lined up. Were thirty years plus with old civil service terms, something like 3 weeks wages per a years service with no limit.

Potentially, yes... Gotta work through consultation, then discuss options!

My pal took this from Reuters and it was a LOT of money. Well worth it.

I was a bit gutted because I was out of scope for VR once I'd gone into a TUPE agreement, so ended up just quiting. I'd done 20 years service at that time :(

My old mentor got enough cash he went to live in the Caribbean and retired. It was mental sums. I think he did have a nice inheritance as well but it was the final straw for him.

I took VR from a public sector job 13/14 years ago, Iā€™d only been there a couple of years but still ended up with a nice sum, and had another job to walk into (which actually set me up for my current career path which was far far better than if Iā€™d just stayed in that job).

Some people there whoā€™d been public sector for 30/40 years had some insane offers under the VR scheme, uncapped calculations that were just silly.

During my long stint at IBM I canā€™t remember how many redundancy consultations I was in, similar to Mace (and a similar company) it was a recurring thing.

Then when I got made redundant in 2023 from the place I left IBM for, as much as that company were cretins, and I hope the place burns (not literally, and they are doing a good job as last Iā€™d heard their ARR had dropped from $100mil to $30mil), even though Iā€™d only been there 8 months they still gave us something rather than just showing us the door with statutory.

But again like 13/14 years ago Iā€™m in a much better place now so it worked out.
