In short: not as good as the first one

I had a 172 Cup 2011-13 and it was fab. Mark Fish looked after it and I clubsported it, stupidly sold it cheap to become a hard worked track car. Wish I hadn’t sold it!

So now, I’ve bought, with a sole eBay bid, a cheap cup again. And it’s s**t. I wanted one with a/c this time because I’m soft and old and will use it for drives that I remember being pretty uncomfortable in the old “proper” cup.

But before that, it needs a little touch of work. For £2,200 I had low expectations. And I was right to.

Bodywork: s**t. Rust in the bottoms of the rear quarters, cracked grille, bombing runs have been done by the raf on the bonnet. The bonnet that doesn’t open.

No evidence of belts/dephaser/pump, ever.

In fact the “service history” was print outs of the old mot history. And it has gone from a long list of advisories to none, under a very very erm, “efficient” owner (as in, why spend money on it when you can’t?)

No turinis.

Bootlid hit me on the head.

Interior is a wuhan rivalling petri dish of sticky plastics and dna.

Wheel bearing fubar’d

Calipers painted yellow

Bullets painted black

A/c is very weak

There’s more, but basically it’s s**t and it needs a lot of work.

So far I have 15” turinis with track tyres to go on, booked in with Two Techs for service, belts, water pump, dephaser and wheel bearings. A nice Sabelt wheel with QR from Russ (mega cup project being broken), seats and harnesses from Graeme (twingo). And about 15 other bits from boot struts to mats to a/c service.

The bodywork is a bit scary, and it may be a case of trying to polish a turd. But it’s my turd with ac. And an ktec exhaust. And a bad smell inside.

Pictures and video of me crying to follow. Wish me luck. Also if you have Mondial blue bonnet, wing, mirrors, let me know.

They could have at least used the old VW T4 wing vent. Not that abomination.

Did it actually serve a purpose?

My 1st thought was perhaps it was some kind of cold air feed but there's just solid metal on the other side so god only knows why they did it 🤷‍♂️

Funny story though, the car needed an engine & a guy on here was breaking a cup so I bought the engine & a load of other mechanical bits & bobs at the expense of the wing he had because the other bits were more important and I was completely skint.
He then said to just take the wing for free as he'd seen the abomination I had & felt sorry for me 🤣

Fair play, he did you a massive favour.

Haven’t seen the cup for 36 hours… all going well at Two Techs when I last checked and hopefully it’s back Friday evening or Saturday. Did have it booked for a/c service and headlights being polished on Saturday so I’m hopeful it will be ready!

Despite it being currently a fairly steaming pile of s**t, I’ve got the ex @Kenich. cup dampers to go onto it, and a list of fripperies, none of which attend to the basic shagged-ness of the car. So that’s fresh RS mats, headlight bulbs, clear side indicators and bulbs, vibratechnics engine mounts, a power flex insert for the dogbone, pollen filter (that is going to be interesting, what state will the old one be in?!?!), a new key, bootlid struts, Alpine head unit that’s CarPlay without having a screen, silver door bullets, then a 5th graphite 15” turini as one is a bit chewed at the edge, and everyone needs a spare (basically some weight in the rear of the car!).

At the same time I’m supposed to be doing a water pump and coolant hose job on my Alpina B3S touring and some upgrades on the MX5 (which is of course not broken). And I’m away for the next few weeks!

Clio is back from Two Techs. Belts, phaser, waterpump, oil service, 2 front wheel bearings and a fixed bonnet release. A couple of other bits done by them, great place, very happy. The headlights are being polished this afternoon and I will make an attempt at getting the Sabelt wheel on. Maybe the 172 B pillar stickers too, if I’m feeling adventurous.

I do need a mondial blue front bumper, drivers side wing, bonnet…amongst many other things.
