Dashboard fell out tonight. And by 'fell' I meant that I swore at it and cried and stubbed my fingers and generally got shitty with it until I managed to pull it out.

Dash bar needs to come out next so I can remove the heater matrix ready for the micro heater and cage to go in. Building a race car is hard work in the dark and on your own 😂

Alternator fecked on my shitbox daily.

IMG_9991.jpeg

Thought it was just the top end gone but after removing the alternator the mount at the bottom was gone which more than likely shook the top end until it snapped.

Currently building another engine for this shell.

So luckily the bottom mount was available as I’m fitting an air con delete kit.

So bought a new alternator for the new engine and

Stole the older one for the shitbox.

After a few weeks of being too busy to look at the Clio, I made some time today and got on with changing the fluids. I want to start with everything done, so engine & gearbox oils plus coolant this morning. I had a free hour at the end of the day, so got the wheels off and went to loosen the bleed nipples so I could start on the brake fluid tomorrow. Both outer front nipples are shagged now and the caliprrs off the car. One sheared off, the other came out complete with most of the aluminium thread from the caliper. Also 2 of the small housings for the locating pins are broken.

Noticed that one of the rear tyres was low on pressure (it was 16 and should have been 40). I’ve not driven the car much since getting out of storage, so not sure how long it’s been low.

Pumped it up and wanted to take it off to see if I could see a nail.

Taking the wheel off involved a 1.5 hour hunt for the locking wheel nut key. At least the garage is a bit tidier now, after me tuning upside down looking for said key.

Continued stripping the Clio tonight for race prep. Took the half cage out tonight and found some... Well.. Oh...

It'll be fine... To be fair I've looked inside the sill and it all looks clean and tidy, this is just where the arch liner clip goes onto. It'll get plated tomorrow when the cage gets welded in.
Old half cage out and already sold

As both my cars are broke I've had to slum it in the gf's poogoat. Omg the headlamps are s**t, not helped by only one working 🙄. I've a few spare bulbs so went to change it.

Just look at all that space behind the headlamp! Now zoom in to the very left of the headlamp back and you'll see the tiny f**king space to access the dipped beam bulb. Le c***s 😡.
Done and we now have 2 candle power 😆.

I also spent. 38 seconds fitting the new wiper blades she's had in the boot for months.

I'm hoping that's the final job ticked off for a while. All fluids are now done and new front callipers / pads fitted. I took it for a run before Christmas and the water temperature dropped fast on the road. New thermostat fitted today, the old one came out in 3 pieces.

In spite of finishing the 'jobs list' I decided to check the scuttle drains and could clearly see the tide mark on the driver's side. I cleared that and fitted new trim clips to the scuttle cover and then decided to check the plugs. That turned out to be a bigger job than expected. One of the plug wells had clearly been full of water at some point, fully rust stained and with a heavily corroded plug washer. 3 of the 4 plug seats had black deposits under the washers, one of them with added crusty rust. I got the rust by carefully dripping vinegar onto the seat, which worked really well. The black deposits (carbon? hard burnt oil?) Were a bit more stubborn. If not down the bottom of the plug well, a scotchbrite pad would have sorted it in 2 minutes. After a few days working intermittently and using brake clean and a home-made aluminium scraper, I gave up and bought a Laser plug seat cleaner. This is a great tool, and cleaned up the seats really well.

Test day today so I had to put the awful original steering wheel back on, I swear it gets bigger every year. Hopefully they don't care that it isn't on straight
