Noisy in belt area

Another day another noise to investigate…

The car had a 12 month service last week, passed its MOT without any advisories and the engine is working beautifully. However, I noticed in the last two days that there is a slight noise from the engine and I’ve just taken this video so that you can hopefully hear it. It seems to be coming from around the belts area. What do you think is causing this sound? You can just make it out in the background. I’m sure those of you who know this engine well will be able to hear it.

It’s in the background, bordering on a squeak but not quite there. If you were with the car you’d have no problem hearing it and where it’s coming from. It’s not coming from the head area.
Ah okay - tricky to pick that up in the videos.

As far as a squeak noise, I have seen that before when alternators are on the way out.

I had the battery tested about 7 weeks ago and the tester said that the alternator was very healthy. It may have been but that doesn’t mean it isn't close to the end 😱

The noise definitely gives me the vibes of a bearing on its way out. It sounds a little like my old thrust bearing on the clutch before it was changed.

The chirpy squeak from a failing thrust bearing is quite similar to the alternator sound when they are failing.

Have you got a mechanics stethoscope? They're good for helping you pinpoint noises on machinery.

You could try removing the aux belt and feeling if the water pump, alternator or PAS pump feel rough, and if the noise goes away with the engine running without the aux belt on. That will at least narrow it down.

Water pump was replaced less than 20k ago (2 years) but nothing else.

The sound is not quite there same as in the video.

Driving home last night I got stuck in the traffic from the boxing at the Co-Op Arena. I noticed that the car was not idiling as well as it had done a few days earlier. When I was through the traffic the engine was fine.
