All I used was 2500 grit then compound with my machine buffer then a small amount of Auto Glym HR polish. I stuck with just the 2500 sand paper because a friend of mine told me it would take ages if I used a lower grade. I had 1 new blotch come up the other day (hence the reason to do this) and...
Well I thought I would give my headlights a little love today and tbh I think the results came out alright.
Only too about 1 hour to do both headlights, I'm sure I could spend a little more time on them and they would be perfect but tbh I can't be arsed and the pub is calling.

tbh there isnt really.
the 3 main things i would say are:
1) Look through history and see if its been run on 5w-40 fully synthetic oil
2) Listen to the left of the engine once warm, make sure it doesn't sound like a diesel
3) Look for proof of belts
Other than that, its just the usual stuff...
