I'll be in a similar position soon, Would a top end rebuild on it's own make sense following a successful compression/leak test? Or would it not make much sense (cost and time wise) compared to a full rebuild? Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread Fletcher.

Personally imo a car should always be driven and detailed. It's a car and not a driveway/garage trinket. But even though a car is tracked and driven doesn't mean it shouldn't be detailed and looked after. Personally I think if you use proper products as Toby mentioned to protect the paint...

Use some engine oil/wd40 as lube on the hose bore too.

Mines same, only real way is to replace the panel (can be had on ebay around £20) but getting old one out and new one in isn't easy.
