Agreed, as far as I know too - in fact the only one in the last few years that I know didn't have a knock sensor (cos it was well publicised) was the Focus RS...
Dunno why it didn't (standard Duratec engine on which it was based certainly has one), but in that you really could tell what fuel...
Agreed - if you're not gonna spend the extra few pennies on super then you wont get the performance...In which case why buy a 182 in the first place!
Haven't had mine long and so far its had about a half:half mix of normal and super. Seems to be running fine, and as quick as expected to me...
Don't forget that the engine (the same basic unit is also fitted in other renault ranges albeit in different states of tune etc) had to be designed to run on a wide variety of fuel grades throughout Europe/Rest of the World.
As such its highly unlikely that it won't operate perfectly well...
Assuming the engine is fitted with a knock sensor (99% are) the ecu should adjust the timing to take account of whatever fuel you throw in.
It'll probably run slightly better/more efficiently with ultimate or optimax, but standard fuel shouldn't hurt it. In which case it really just depends...
One here in Northampton - full fat variety (cos was brought through a discount scheme and full-fat or cup prices were pretty much the same).

I was there with my inferno full-fat 182.
Saw a couple of racing blue in the infield area - one in the car-park backing onto the paddock - not far from the Mosler, Enzo and XJ220(!)
There was also a black full-fat 182 parked behind one of the main grandstands (with kerbed alloys :-o)
