Clio 182: 98 RON or 95 RON?

  Nippy white cup
I use 98ron 99% of the time and ultimate if I need to. There is a Total near me that has 98ron and was pretty cheap but shot up yesterday to 99.9. b******s!

Always super, ultimate or optimax for me. Says 98 on the filler flap so why put in less? if you cant afford to fuel it then buy another car!

I've heard that it's an average of 98RON at the pumps, but can actually vary from 94 up to 99...

I`ve always used optimax apartfrom the odd £5`s worth of what ever is available if i get caught out and can`t find a shell garage.

What about oil though, surely it`s worse to use crap oil than the proper ELF rated stuff that it says in the hand book, i asked at reg vardy when i had my service what they would have put in if i hadn`t had brought my own in and the mechanic basicly said "what ever is in the drum, all the cars use that".!!

yes I always take my own elf 5w40 synthetic oil to renault dealers. Take it at 6K miles intervals for changing. Get it from total elf butler cheapest place in UK to buy oil it seems. About £2.80 a litre. Renault dealers prob but wrong grade in if you leave it to them.
IF you dont want to use elf oilman on here supplies other brands, but still 5w40.

I agree if you cant afford decent petrol surely you cant afford a decent car?

So is it worth making the trip to Esso if there's one nearby rather than use optimax?

if you struggle to find optimax nearby then at least use super unleaded of another brand.

Agreed - if you're not gonna spend the extra few pennies on super then you wont get the performance...In which case why buy a 182 in the first place!

Haven't had mine long and so far its had about a half:half mix of normal and super. Seems to be running fine, and as quick as expected to me!

My point was more that it won't hurt it if you run it on normal fuel.

I've run mine on Optimax since new, right up until the recent petrol price hike when it went to 99.9, so I decided to try normal Shell unleaded and there is no difference at all in performance that I can tell, and the fuel economy is the same.

think he was meaning esso supply tesco, afaik esso only do super at 97 ron, correct me if im wrong tho...

  Ford Fiesta
does to me too. Is it definate that esso supply tesco?

Still sticking with optimax anyway, 98 ron as whats suggested. It wont harm your cars running 95 or even lower, afterall these cars are sold all over world. But why buy a performance car and skimp on fuel for sake of a few pence. If it's just for cleaning properties it's worth it.

(lol I wonder how many threads there are on cliosport about fuel grades... ;)

as far as i know Vicky all modern cars adjust for different grade fuels, so yeah your 172 will adjust if you use normal fuel rather than the posh stuff.

I usually put in Optimax when I can (I do about 80 miles per day) and Im sure it is a tad quicker on Optimax. If I cant find Optimax I put in BP Ultimate Have put in normal uleaded a few times and cant notice any diff in performance between that and Ultimate tbh. Checked the mpg over a few tankfuls and I get 32-33 on Optimax and 29-30 on BP Ultimate.

I was reading a thread over on scoobynet about this and the general opinion was that BP ultimate was the best fuel to buy followed by esso supreme followed by shell optimax!

Im not too clued up on fuels but optimax needs additives to make it 98. Esso/BP are better grade fuels and are a MINIMUM 97. The additives are there to 'clean' your engine so 1 in every 4 tanks is reccomended!

I too have 98 ron marked on the inside of my fuel filler cap (LCR)

90% of the time i use optimax but occasionally use BP/Esso 97

I wouldn't dream of sticking supermarket 95ron in! Why buy a performance hatch and stick a low grade fuel?

There is definitely a difference! When i had my car remapped by jabbasport the ignition r****d for 97 ron was 3 degrees as opposed to the reccomended 98ron. I dread to think what 95 ron fuel would do!

Luckily modern engines come with a knock sensor allowing the timing to be altered, but i doubt your engine lasting 100000miles if your feeding it full of 95 crap!

Change to at least 97SUL

Agreed, as far as I know too - in fact the only one in the last few years that I know didn't have a knock sensor (cos it was well publicised) was the Focus RS...
Dunno why it didn't (standard Duratec engine on which it was based certainly has one), but in that you really could tell what fuel grade you had in it. I ran low once and put 95 in it, and it was really unhappy - misfiring and pinking all over the place. Mind you it could be pretty susceptible to air temperature/humidity too.
