in theory you should be able to use either. The copper one may have leaked if it was slightly too big.

Sounds like it might be the lambda sensor before the cat if it's a bit fuelley when cold. Before spending any money try swapping the lambda sensors around as the one after the cat is normally a lot cleaner and has more life in it. They're exactly the same. You'll need to get the car on some axle...
