It's likely a build up of installed applications running in the background, your google tools bars and what not. Either that or an over zealous antivirus. Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Startup Untick everything (Within Reason - Google Updater for example) Apply > OK > Restart Machine

Updated mine yesterday using the toolkit from USB, supprisingly a painless experience. For some reason though benchmark tests are showing it as running at 170 mb/s so really not sure if it's fubar.

Movement in the engine could be opening a small gap in the system, hopefully the rusted joint mentioned :)

If the oil is low and you have blue smoke the turbo could be on its way out. When did you last check the oil prior to this, any leaks ?
