If its not making a good connection, attach the earth jump lead to some bare metal on the car. If this works, then you have a bad earth cable between battery and car.

^lol I have one and it was great for what it is. Obviously it won't keep keep the top of your body strapped tight like harnesses but it stops you from moving about on the seat. I'd definitely recommend if you don't want harnesses.
