Resize it down to mimik the resizing down done when printing to something like 6x4 from a high MP image.

When you resize the image back up the photo editing software fills in the missing pixels by duplicating surrounding pixels etc. hence the image doesnt look sharp anymore.
Ok Cool. you should have also removed the ~ sign as the ~ sign in linux is your home directory ! in your case if you typed
cd ~
it would take you to /home/mike/
(in actual fact if you just type "cd" it also takes you to your home folder ;) but I dont think thats consistent across all...

No, it wont.
A 3mp resolution is lower than a 10mp resolution, hence the image will be bigger. you would need to scale down (read remove pixels) from the 10mp image to get it to the same size as the 3mp !
its trying to load the nvidia drivers but cant find them at best guess.
okay do it the harder way. Download the nvidia drivers from their website and remember where you saved the file. now do the following

Try the live CD, wont touch your windows OS (or your hard drive for that matter) but will give you a fully working desktop. It will run a little slow compared to if you installed it (after all it is running from a CD !)

Thats because in order to go smaller you had to loose a load of the pixels.
