Well lets see where were we. Ah yes, test driving.
It didnt go well. Started an intermittant miss, and as I was diagnosing (Cylinder 1, as it turned out) it started leaking. Ominous.
Then it went kaboom. Fully dropped a cylinder, clouds of white smoke out the back, coolant all over the...
New engine, popped the inlet studs out to properly clean the mating surface up
This is a Phase 1 engine, going in a phase 3. While most differences dont matter that much and it all fits together, the one that does is the fact this engine has a distributor cap & associated drive, whereas the...
Oh, one more thing - I got my son in to help me adjust the gear linkage. I stuck the box in 5th, then he held the stick in 5th gear position while I tightened the linkage - this worked and I now have all six gears available, the clutch works, AND the (electronic) speedo still works - result!
Final thing on the 9 this time around, I was wondering why the (one) headlight that was fitted wasnt working right, well, the block connector to the headlight had disintigrating terminals. What you dont realise with more modern cars being so prevalent now is that the block connectors here werent...
I found my Zeitronix ZT3 (at last) in the cupboard, and decided to fit that up, meaning I needed a lambda in the downpipe, so I did that and found some leftover wrap in the cupboard too, which conveniently was just the right length.
Little bit of jiggery pokery in the ECU software and...
So - had a few days off work and got a few bits done.
Started off by mounting the Clio 197 rad - didnt want to hack the car around so I made some brackets to bolt to holes already available on the subframe.
Painted & fitted
100% agree. Fortunately these are right at the start of the electronics age and are still fairly simple by modern standards. Can you imagine picking this sort of thing apart on a car 30 years newer? Makes me shudder!
So I dug into it and it does have SOME oil pressure but not enough to let it ride. When up to temp its tripping below the min pressure warning level. It also smokes like its on 60 Embassy a day!
I spent a day fixing the oil pressure switch, sender, and wiring...someone has been here before and...
So I've had a right old game with oil pressure to the turbo, looks like the original oil feed was restricting flow. Oil was getting through when I cranked it to test, but not enough not to feck the turbo up. I ended up tearing the lot out and making a whole new feed pipe with AN6 fittings, and...
(While you're here dont forget my myraid of other active threads... the Phase 1 R9 Turbo thread, the 21 Quadra thread the Clio V6 thread, and the (very short) 220 Trophy thread )
Not my car for a change but i've got this sickly individual in for examinations. First look indicates little or no...
Took it to Oulton with the Vee for a static show. The first and last of the RenaultSport Clio's.
New discs and pads next, oh, and it got an oil & filter last month too. Early, but can't hurt can it?!
Running and driving absolutely beautifully, and made the trip to Oulton Park for a static show on Saturday without complaint. I really enjoyed driving it again after the recent sabbatical. I would go as far as to say this is the best handling V6 in the country, with its modifications and geo...
It might run but having some issues, and i'm in too much of a mardy with it to go into detail.
Ive got the cooling system plumbed up anyway, but thats about it on the positive side. Used a Clio 197 rad left over from my Meglio conversion, sits in there nice just needs some basic brackets...
OK so now we have an MOT again :) back out for the summer!
Pleased its back in the game and thats now six cars (and a motorbike) taxed and tested at home, with another two running and on the way, and only one (the 21, bare shell) not running.
It looks like i'll have to have some bespoke handbrake cables made to do the job properly, but as this is time consuming and costly, and I want to take the car somewhere this month I got hold of some 3mm steel cable and end clamp/terminator things I tried to spot some weld on the cable to stop...
Aux belt refitted with new tensioner and idler and that finished off day one, it was ready to lift back in the next day.
Day 2 begins with lifting the brute back up and reconnecting the AC pipes, I had a couple of helpers watch the engine back in so it didnt snag anything (cheers guys!)...
I stopped for a cuppa and had a chat with my mate who owns the garage about the procedure, cant take any risks with this I dont fancy bending a bunch of valves! I threaded the belt on, then released all the pulleys - if you look at the pics you can see they all have 4 10mm bolts holding them in...
The way its set up means I could drop the whole cradle down complete, and though the engine mounts are suspended it sits on blocks within the subframe easily. With the engine down and car up, i didnt need to move it anywhere (which means it stayed in the right place to go back in). No need to...
Update time - car was SORN'd for a bit as the belts were due - big job. It last had a belt service in 2015, schedule is 5 years or 72k. Ill run belts 50% over on time if the mileage is low, so 7.5 years which was last year hence it got parked.
So - IT'S TIME. After considering multiple ideas...
Yes mate it did, thanks! Pleased its at least drivable to make garage logistics easier. Also nice to be working on something I might make a few quid on when done! (assuming I can bring myself to sell it!)
Reminder to self - fit the f'king reverse switch sensor BEFORE you fill the gearbox oil - fuming!
I stuck the 9 in the work area to see if I could get the lump to fire now the red 21 is movable, so I threw the engine oil and gearbox oil in, connected up the fuel pipework and an EFI fuel reg...
Couple of undercarraige shots before I dropped it off the stands
Oooo shiny heatshield sir?
And we're out! Bloody handbrake doesnt work which is annoying but its moving under its own steam, which I count as excellent.
Fantastic progress! I was never a 5 lover, too small for my size, but I still have a 9 Turbo (same engine), and 2 21 Turbo's from that era. Brilliant cars!
Refitted the rubber trim on the nosecone - if you dont use double sided tape to seat it it never looks right even with the plugs in place.
Found some trim to replace the headlight rubber seal, its not an exact match but I think it'll work. Old ones are all bubbly and horrible.
MUCH...
Doing my best! Should be a fairly nice motor when done and if garaged, which I hope it will for the money ill be asking, should be a good solid classic for many years to come with only routine maintenance.
