Jack engine up, undo the 4 engine mount 16mm bolts holding the mount to the chassis.
Place a block of wood (4" high..ish) between the mount and the chassis. And rest the engine on it.
You should then have enough room to clear the subframe.

Could have dropped a valve, would be unlikely that this would cause the plug to push out. But I would certainly look into it. Usually a plug coming out would be a misfire, not a loud tapping noise you...
